Hi, I am looking for some help with my family room design. I don't like the fireplace as is and I am struggling with furniture layout. I can only really see having one piece of furniture in the room (similar to the sectional we have now). Anything else would make it too tight. But just having one piece is a bit limiting.

I love these slipper chairs from Target. They come in a choice of fabrics/colors to please anyone, don't take up a lot of visual space, but look really comfortable. Or I could see a pair of upholstered benches under the windows (also from Target).

Thank you soooo much! I love them. Totally my style too. And I never thought of upholstered benches under the windows but it is a totally fabulous idea. Cheap and cheerful for while the kids are young. I am going to the website right now!

Would adding a mantle atop the fireplace help? Adding a few decorative objects there would keep them out of reach of children and also distract your eye from the fireplace itself. I concur with the idea of benches/ ottomans- no sharp corners, extra seating. and storage if they open up.

Have you ever thought of a wall to wall build in , incorporating the windows and the fireplace and make it look like a feature wall? Not only that it would add a lot of dimension to the room but it also adds a lot of storage and display places. You don't have to go crazy, with a little bit of creativity, IKEA has a lot of nice things that you can work around with.

I HAVE thought of a built in storage unit but I never thought of doing it with Ikea. Is there any particular line that I should look at specifically?

There is a wide selection of cabinets there which allows you to customize it to your own needs. Depending on your taste you could either go for something traditional or you could created a modern look with some cherry and glass cabinets. They have some nice glass sliding doors which allow you to display or conceal the TV if you choose to. Check it out because they introduce new things very often. Hope this helps!
