1950 Ranch Help

last modified: 11 years ago

We just purchased this home and need some serious help. Aside from the obvious -new landscaping with that tree that takes over half the house being removed -what should we do - obviously a new door, and the shutters on the side of the door being removed I'm not sure where to start. I really don't want to paint the brick - the roof is only 7 years old and even though I wouldn't have picked that color of shingles it makes no sense to replace it!! Any advise would be greatly appreciated. HELP.

It's disappointing that there is no roof over the entrance. That just makes entering that much easier. The landscape bed walls look like an afterthought to me. Do you want to keep the flagpole? I don't think they look appropriate in front of homes that don't have lots of acreage in the front.

No! I have no intentions of keeping the flagpole. Thanks for the comments.

I would remove all of the shutters as they are not typically used on ranch homes and do not appear to be properly used here. Instead of using custom-sized shutters, it looks like longer, more standard-sized shutters were inappropriately added to each side of each window, and then another shutter was hung below each window to fill the gap. This appears to be why the shutters in the lower right corner of the left window are not lined up. I would then paint the garage light gray so it's not the focal point.

bev, those could be fightin words up here. not only do they have that one, but also one for the dixie flag. Let me say, that took some getting used to. But, if you are not using, I have the same idea. Also, i would say you should remove all the shutters they are not needed and really don't relate to your home. Please do not paint the brick. You turn an easy maintenance to one of work. Noone ever seems happy in the long run. I would say go darker on all trim and the garage door so it fades back. Then nice and attractive different color to make your door stand out. I am going to rummage around I think i have some options here somewhere. In the meantime here is a thread where were discussing the same thing. It also has a picture of my home on it.

In addition, I do not do well with the paint programs, but I seem to do alright with behr's and I believe they have a brick house, put in a color or two you like then go try them out on the brick house, other colors will show up at the bottom of the screen.

Can you tell us your zone if you wish to discuss plants, and which direction does the yard face.

The house is located in Central Illinois -zone 5 I believe. Thanks much for your comments.

I still think you may like the garage if it was "light gray".

i like beverly's interpret, though i think you need to brighten that doorway. Oh, and I would not paint any of the brick, including the planters. I am loathe to recommend you remove the bars til you know your neighborhood better. but you could paint them the same as the door.

you know your little planter? I would plant lots of bulbs and/or herbs in there

Lavender, tarragon (french), dill, oregano, mint, and lemon balm. first 3 bush, last 3 spread, plant along edges so they fall over. People will always be in a great mood when they come to your home, because as they brush past they will catch the scents and they are naturally soothing.

In addition, most bulbs grow in zone 5. Problem is they only bloom a short while, so I would stock the planters with things like shasta daisy, coneflower, black eyed susan, salvia, speedwell, certain sages-smaller ones. You do not want large bushy plants, you want them to be about a foot or 2 tall. not so small so they are not visible, but you don't want to end up overgrown like your tree. i know that all these will maintain themselves, without any maintenance on your part, and they will bloom most of the year. (maybe yearly weeding, but spreaders often choke it out. and it is not a large area to weed) get a few daffodills and the like for spring. You may wish to get other plants, I assumed we were dealing with abundant sun. When buying other choices I always go for a range of one above zone to one below. so grow in zones 4-6.

Minus the shutters, tree and discovered copper over the front window.

Well, I imagine you won't be getting rid of that. See, somebody did love her!
