i have the same prob and decided to close entirely both of bottom niches I also have a window on top part :(

thanxs. that's an idea but i was hoping to make use of the space to store all the TV stuff..plan to remove that mantel as well..I guess with a window atop u don't have your TV in the niche..

no tv up there for us , my fireplace been a source of anxiety for me I would love to hammer it entirely but I can't as budget don't allow and its a working fireplace in winter :( good luck in fixing at least you can have your tv up there :)

my son and hubby... got to work to try and improve this fireplace surround which had niches that I did not like. I believe they have made it much better.. work in progress.. they will add doors to bottom half and add a mantle.. any suggestions? this is their first attempt at any thing like this..

complete with mantel..so much better I think..
