I think you could have a lot of fun with this couch. Here's a room that I think plays with a dark couch well. This could easily be done with your couch since the plaid lines are very faint/thin. (click the photo to see full image)

I also think adding great textured pillows will soften it up and add that feminine look, similar to this pillow.I'd keep the walls a lighter color to pull the light lines of the pattern from the couch and keep the room bright (since the couch is so dark). Hang light colored floor-to-cieling curtains, similar to the color of the pillow above, with a bit of puddling of the curtains onto the floor. Place them so they rest on the wall, so the edge of the hung curtain meets the beginning of the window's edge, giving your windows the illusion of being larger than they are. You'll need as much light as possible to keep the room bright and feminine.

You could also play with the lines of the couch with lines of an interesting (and similar colored) rug....in case you don't like the persian rug look, like this one from West Elm.

I would do a cream black white scheme and add texture with throw pillows and a throw and a flotaki rug. Paint walls a deep beige. And add white modern elements.
