Furniture make over gone wrong! help!

I thought id be ambitious and stain my new bedroom furniture. I got the end tables for free and my dresser very cheap on craigslist so i have no idea what kind of wood they are. I sanded them down using a hard grit then a finer grit, removed 99% of the old stain.

Now time to stain.... (this is where it goes wrong) i first applied wood conditioner, than stain. I applied the stain with a foam brush and rag on the legs, once i applied the stain i waited just a few mins and wiped it but then it got a blotchy...

There is lots of those all over... this photo is after 48 hours of drying. its all over the end table... what do i do?

Also i cannot get the ends to stain...

I got expresso so i want them really dark, but they're super light as you can see in the photos... today i applied more stain to the dresser and the other end table that didn't get blotchy and they look better but they're still really light and thats after a 2nd coat.

I need major help... where did i go wrong on this end table? should i resand this one are start over?

this is the stain I'm using...

any advice would be helpful!! thank you!!
