My concern with your hearth sticking out is that if you remove part of it, you're not going to have flooring under there. And while I've never removed tile, we have removed other flooring, and it would be a challenge to remove the excess length without damaging the rest of it. You could demo it, but if you want your home to look decent you're going to have to have it retiled.

Save until you have the money to redo your floors, and then adjust your hearth to a normal size. Better to wait and have it done right than end up with some half-baked job that looks worse than what you started with.

It hard to tell much about the fireplace from your photo. If it is a dedicated gas fireplace the hearth may not be required. If the wood flooring is under the hearth you may be able to pull it up and refinish the floor. You could also remove the hearth platform and install the hearth flush with the wood floor and do a matching surround, covering the area where the hearth was against the firebox. This would stop you from visually (and literally) tripping over the hearth. Slate can be a lower cost finish material. You also may be able to paint over the gold aluminum trim on the doors to with some high temp black paint to make the fireplace less busy.

I agree with saving till you can really change it up...in the meantime I'd spray the brass black (heat resistant BBQ paint) and paint the tile/brick a neutral shade.

Thanks for all the comments. Old photo; already painted the brass black with simple black handles. All the wood on this floor runs into each other, around 1200 sq ft. Can't really redo them. However I believe there is wood beneath the tile hearth and, if not, I think the idea of replacing it with slate or similar on the floor is what I'll do.
