The best way is to first determine your family's lifestyle in using the kitchen. If you stand for long period of time in front of the sink or the stove, consider getting an area rug that has more cushioning/padding below.

Then consider the coloring of your kitchen, and what colors you want to draw from it in your area rug. In this picture pops of red are throughout the kitchen, and are enhanced in the rug.

Also ensure that it won't be a tripping hazard. Locate it in an area that isn't going to hinder traffic or little or furry feet! :)
