Maybe some more information would help. Behind the boarded up wall is my finished kitchen, laundry, bath, & garage. I'm trying to finish this side now. I can add photos of my kitchen to give you an idea of my style of it would help. I'm kinda lost with the furniture placement, so the lighting is hard to figure out also. I'm not into ceiling fans so I didn't want one of those in the great room. I didn't know if a cool chandelier (Edison bulb) would work! Just an idea!

Put a green oxen cove light on the TV wall. It will provide great ambiance and a modern aesthetic too!

Will you put stone on the fireplace fascia? It always looks good to put recessed lighting near (about 2' away) a stone or otherwise textured surface worth highlighting.

Rainmaking thanks that's a good idea! As you can see my TV wall is real long. So is that kinda like a drywalled lowered beam with a light above?

It's aluminum. You can get it on amazon or maybe even here on houzz in different lengths. You could put it all the way across your wall if you want, but don't need to. I used it in every room upstairs....bedrooms, loft, office...everyone loves it. Downstairs we did built-in coves and reveals. I love the reveals but it takes a lot of planning to build them in.

Hi Poshky, I have a few ideas for you. I recommend putting some recessed lights in the middle of the Great Room, where I assume you'll be placing furniture, in addition to the cans at the windows. Also, I would remove the can over the TV area, as this will cause too much glare while watching TV. Rainmaking is right about the placement of the can over the fireplace, it needs to be pulled off the wall at least 2' to be effective at highlighting the fireplace or any artwork above.

Thank you both very much! I'm sorry the O is for outlet and the R is for recessed light! What do you think about a light over the front door? Do I put any? I was thinking about hanging a pendant in the reading nook because sconces are hard to find and I don't really know if it goes with my theme!

How high are your ceilings? I would stick with sconces by the front door (b/w door and windows on each side) unless you have 10'. Also eliminate the "R's" over the windows...that's just asking for glare unless you plan to always have treatments closed. Add another R at your fireplace so there isn't one centered with the fireplace. Make them small, like 3". A pendant in your reading nook sounds fine. I personally don't like recessed lighting in the middle of the room but ID has a good point that you may need more light there. At this stage can you build in a cove in that area?

Yes windows are on each side of the front door plus side lights. My ceiling is 10'7. I put recessed lighting over the windows because someone told me to at one time, but I guess that's wrong:/ I would say it may be possible to put a cove in depending on if my contractor could do it. This is my front door.

You have enough height for a pendant (small chandelier) over the front door but I like the sconce look better if you have enough room b/w door and windows. Is there a window over the door to show a chandelier outside? Is there a chandelier over the door on the front porch? You have good ceiling height. This photo shows my reveal lights...I will try to get one of the coves later.

A photo didn't show up. No there is not a window above the door so you wouldn't be able to see you chandelier outside and there isn't a chandelier on the porch. There is about 2 1/2 feet between the sidelights and the windows. Thank you so much for your help . I love the different ideas too:) this is a panoramic picture of my TV wall and front door.

We are remodeling so yes that is a molded shower and that clock was was my husbands mothers and we haven't decided what we're going to do with it yet! I'll post some pics of my kitchen! Your kitchen looks awesome poshky! What is that empty space next to the fridge? If you can swing the electrical work, think about putting some fluorescent lights above the cabinets to light the ceiling and of course some under cabinet LEDs. Put them on separate switches from the recessed lights.

Thanks so much! We are wanting to backsplash that area in turquoise subway tile and hang a flat screen on it. We spend a lot of time in the kitchen! Would you think it would be to much going on if you did that cove on the front, back, and tv wall in the great room? Also what did you have in mind of cove lighting in the center of the room? More Windows went in today:)

I have to think about that first one a bit. My gut says opposite walls are fine but adjacent ones might be too much. In the center I was thinking exactly like the cove in our kitchen. I know the lights are off but they are in the long sides and light up the ceiling. Those slots in the short sides are AC vents.

I see what you mean now! Since my ceilings are 10'7 do you have an opinion on how far down I'd have to drop the cove? You are probably right. It would probably be to much on the adjacent walls. My contractor liked the idea today when I talked to him about it. He thought it would look good and be different.

I would mount the green oxen coves just above the door/window frames. Basically put them as low as possible without disturbing the geometry. As for a cove in the center, you might need to drop the ceiling to build it. I dropped my ceilings a foot (from 12' to 11') to get all this lighting in (the coves in kitchen and family rooms, and reveals basically around the perimeter of everything except the doorways). If that presents a problem, what you can do instead is create a reverse cove. That is, frame a box down and put a cove around the perimeter. I think I might have a picture in one of my ideabooks, I'll look.
