I'm wondering if anyone has experience planting early spring bulbs into buffalo grass.

I have a recently planted buffalo grass lawn in full sun, zone 6a, an urban yard with fairly well-drained silty clay loam. Along the northern edge of the lawn it's sunny in the spring, but shaded in summer (the buffalo grass is sparse there and so I will eventually fill in with sedge, etc.). The grass doesn't start to green up until May, so I would think an early bulb could get plenty of sun before the emerging grass would start to shade it. The grass is pretty aggressive though after that, and it has deep roots so that I shouldn't have to water it much during the summer at all.

Thinking about Chionodoxa forbesii, Iris reticulata, Tulipa tarda, Scilla siberica, Crocus ancyrensis. I'd be interested in any thoughts on which might be the best suited for my situation. I think I'm up for planting large numbers. It's about 1000 square feet.

Also, I've got some very active squirrels. The Iris in particular seems like it might be a bad fit for that.
