Is it too late to change your mind about all the cans in the ceiling? Really don't fit the mood of the room. Sorry. I know it's not what you asked

This will strike you as strange but it might be stunning. I would paint the area with the cans and AC, and the center panel black. Leave the raised trim white. Be sure the trim on the cans and vents is also black. They will vanish and the trim will pop. I'm sure you've chosen a stunning chandelier to drop from that ceiling rosette, and it will be very glamorous - in keeping with the fireplace and the rest of the room. Be sure to add some touches of black when you add the fabrics/furniture. Maybe we can get groveraxle to "paint" it for you so you can see for yourself.

What a beautiful room and ceiling. I might paint the entire flat surfaced ceiling one shade lighter or darker than the walls, so you eyes continue right up and it will also emphasize the workmanship and detail with the molding still being white. Only painting the centre panel may feel too choppy, but you could start there and if it feels off, continue down, which may be nicer anyway.

Mind if I ask the paint color?--very nice.

You may have to lighten the paint by 50% to get it to match the color of the walls.

I just used Microsoft Paint that came with Windows 7 to add the paint color.

I might even consider painting the cove also.

Beverley what would it look like with the blue on the section where the lights/speakers are as well as the cove and middle...if it remains white it may stand out and it should be less prominent? The ceiling is already dramatic, but your eyes stop at the molding and the room feels cut in half. If the blue was carried right up, your eyes will be going right to the centre molding and to the chandelier that will be hung.

If you use the blue of the walls go two shades lighter & I would just do the section you asked about.
