Yup, that's a dated kitchen. Is the landlord open to you refinishing/painting the cabinets? That will make the biggest difference, plus you can purchase newer hardware. If they aren't, you can always take the doors off for the time being (store them in a safe place), and rock the open shelf look.

- Change the light fixtures

- Change the socket covers

- Refinish appliances. All of them are all different colors. They have some great products on the market now that you can at least refinish the refrigerator.

- Get a new shade, or curtain for the window that goes with whatever paint color your select for the walls.

And you actually can paint over tile- I'd suggest the backsplash only as the tile you use might chip...

See if the landlord is willing to have the cabinets painted white. Change out the hardware to something updated and attractive. (Keep the old hardware and replace it when you move.) Change out the lighting fixtures to something more attractive. (Keep and replace old fixtures when you move.) Try removable wall paper on the backsplash in colors that coordinate with the countertops. Paint the grout lines on the countertops white. If you succed in getting the cabinets painted white, I would look for a terra cotta paint in a mid-range tone for the walls.

It's a crying shame no one appreciates pink ceramic counter tile any more... In addition to everyone else's suggestions, I would advise a new sink and definitely a new faucet (I'm partial to the gooseneck ones myself but the more modern looking single piece with a pull down sprayer and soap dispenser are pretty neat). Just make sure to pick that out before the sink so you know how many holes to get : ) it's amazing what hardware and fixtures can do to spruce up kitchens and baths.

They sell peel-n-stick tiles for your backsplash. You might be able to find them for the countertop also...They are not that cheap, but if you plan on being in the space for a few years, it might be worth it. The peel-n-stick below is on the Wayfair website, called Mosaik bellagio.

I agree with everyone who said paint the cabinets, but I wonder if they're real wood, or laminate? If you do end up painting them new hardware is a must.

The kitchen isn't all bad. At least the appliances aren't ancient and covered in years of grease, I've seen that before.

charleee- I think they are wood- my parents had cabinets like that in one house and we used to call them the Fred Flintstone cabinets...hahaha

Fred Flintstone! Good one! It was hard for me to tell what they were in the pic. If they're real wood, def paint them.
