Juniperus virginiana. It is commonly called eastern red cedar but it isn't a cedar, it's a juniper. They grow like weeds everywhere and I pull them out of my beds with the weeds. I consider it a weed tree but some can grow into very narrow blue/green pillars that can be nice and desirable. The growth habit will greatly vary from seedling to seedling though and many of them can be pretty darn ugly.

In my opinion I would pull them out unless you come across a nice tidy, compact, narrow growing one or unless you simply want to quickly fill in an area with an evergreen. There are better trees to be had though. =)

Interesting. I see the junipers all over growing naturally but the bluish through me off. Yes, they can grow quite ugly. I may attempt to bonsai a few because everything else I attempt to buy for bonsai die in short order. Thx again.

bonsai is a great use for these semi-invasive weed trees ...

though invasive in the north ... they might be native down south ... the basis of the cedar fence post and bark industry ...

i am not using the word invasive in its true horticultural sense ...

when you think about it.. a plant that self seeds itself all over your yard ... should not really be encouraged ...

Also , if you plant apple trees ,red cedar is the source of cedar apple rust

effecting other plants as well
