Need some kitchen color ideas.

We started with the granite. Looking to paint the cabinets and add back splash. Really wanted the back splash to pop. The kitchen wall color will get painted too. I added under cabinet lighting. Was thinking off white tone for the cabinets or some shade of grey. Also going to change out doors and drawers later to shaker style.

It's difficult to provide advice without knowing what else is going on around this space in terms of other colours, and some idea of what kind of style appeals to you.

One thing I would suggest is that you remove the scalloped wood valance over the sink; it's just getting in the way of the window, and isn't in keeping with the style of the cabinets (either the existing or Shaker).

I would also consider adding floating shelves to the end of the run of uppers on the right hand wall, so that the end of the shelves line up with the counter. This is a real pet peeve of mine because it forces the backsplash to stick out past the cabinets, which looks goofy, IMHO. They could be painted out the same colour as your cabinets, once you've chosen a colour for them.

First of all, remove the cabinet doors and scalloped valance from over the sink and put the cabinets on the side where you have the garbage can, and add at least one open shelf below it.

You should have extended the granite to where the garbage can is, since you are going to change the cabinet doors, this would give you more counterspace.

Please post pictures of the rest of the kitchen(refrig, sliders, kit. table, etc...)

@mcburja72 we are working with a blank canvas on colors. Great idea on the floating shelves. Yeah the valance will get removed.

@shirlpp working with what we got for now. Too late to extend granite.

I suggest a navy blue or grey matte paint for the lower cabinets and something brighter, like a creamy white for the top cabinets. I like breaking it up!

Thanks for adding the picture of the rest of the kitchen - really nice.

Sometimes it's more difficult to start from a blank slate than having to work with a set starting point, so it's going to come down to what you and Ms. Soze like. Do you like vibrant colours or more neutral rooms? Do you like lots of contrast, or a more monotone feel?

I'd suggest that you look through kitchen photos on Houzz and elsewhere, and see if your eye keeps being drawn to the same kind of palette. Do you always lean towards white cabinets and walls, with grey and black accents? Do you seem to gravitate towards dark painted cabinets? What is it about Shaker style that you like, and how might you incorporate that into other kitchen elements? Is there a colour scheme you associate with Shaker?

Maybe come back with some photos of other kitchens that really speak to you, and then see what suggestions others might have.

    Best of luck.

You want a mid tone gray . . warm enough not to go blue .. test bm thundercloud,

better depth - gull wing gray http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/gullwinggray

deeper yet - bm pewter http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/pewter

Test them in your latitude for how gray they appear - get two coats on a foamcore board and set them in the kitchen and watch them at different times of day.

Do a simple classic backsplash - white subway ceramic with gray grout, or carrerra marble penny rounds.

You may need a warm tone on the walls to balance - the yellow isn't the worst mistake, just needs to be softer.

So there is a lot that will happen over the next few months.

    Shaker Doors and Drawers

    Stainless Fridge

    Stainless Microwave

    Pendant Lighting over big counter

Floating Shelves to extend cabinet above counter

    New Floors, sooner or later

    New Light above the table

    New Table

    New wall color

My next immediate thing is painting the walls, cabinets and do the back splash. We like the modern look, which is why we are looking to do that shaker style. We want to brighten up the kitchen. The yellow is old mishap and we want to get away from it. We are happy with the warm grey tones.

Hi its difficult to suggest colours with out a finished picture or idea of what you have in mind , you need an objective when picking colour it could be an accessory painting or trimming in the room some thing you are trying to match or blend . To illustrate my point i have used the granite and using our app which you can download free if you have an iPhone i have extracted cours from the stone itself , you can order sample pots through the app from most brands, you can print out a swatch and get it matched at your local colour store you can also find nearest stockists heres the link mopacha good luck

So just a thought here...since you both seem to like white cabinetry, why not paint the existing cabinets for now, rather than replacing them? If you replace the fronts, you're going to be painting the boxes anyway. Change out the hardware to something like these...

and with the new SS appliances, and white cabinets, you've made a major improvement.

mcburja72 I will be painting the current doors for now. I am small business, so my money be funny. I know its double work but it is what it is.

Agree that you'll get an instant update by just painting the walls. However, I'd really suggest that you have a good idea of what you want the kitchen to look like at the end of the process, to keep the amount of rework to a minimum. For example, shaker cabinets are traditionally a light birch colour, so if that's what you want down the road, make sure you choose a wall colour now that will work later. Of course, if you want to keep white cabinets, that won't be an issue.

If you like the picture that er612 posted above, maybe consider painting your upper cabinets in a white (with a little bit of grey), and do the base cabs in a dark gray. Would look pretty striking with your granite.

I think that once you paint the cabinets and change the hardware to brushed nickel, you will find that you do not need to change the doors to Shaker. I'd keep the cabinets the same color, I would not put one color on the bottoms and another on the tops. I'd still remove that little cabinet from over the sink.

The grey that is on the walls, posted by er612 is lovely...so you can go with something like a BM linen white on your cabinets(appears to be the color in the pictures you and your wife like), and the light grey on your walls or light grey on your cabinets and a darker grey on your walls or BM linen white.

The backsplash in the pictures are showing a subway tile - which would be nice - or you can go with a glass 12x12.

I think you should look into IKEA cabinets. For the cost of new doors and repaint you will be at the same price even if you do it yourself. That is s standard kitchen that would be about $2500 from IKEA or some of the RTA cabinet sites. In the end you will still have painted cabinets.

Not trying to discourage just sometimes people do not estimate costs to compare. I have refinished cabinets and will tell you that they will always look like refinished cabinets no matter how careful you are.

Also change everything around them and the cabinets will look 100 times better.

Here is a really cool look that sort of flows with the photos you posted above. If you want to go with the white cabinets and white counters with gray accents, a gray glass tile would go extremely well with the look you are going for.

I like the look you are going towards l, I would go with light grey satin finish cabinets but with high gloss white crown molding and baseboard. Continue the white under the toe kick to frame that cabinetry in. If you want the backsplash to really pop I like useing crackled glass filled porcelain mosaics, I know that's a mouth full, its porcelain tiles with depressions that they fill with glass that cracks when its fired. It gives a great sparkle and can bridge that modern yet classic look you are going for. Look at Walker Zanger or waterworks websites for ideas.
I would use similar colors on the splash and walls.

A little 3D model I was working on for the kitchen. Going to attempt to make floating shelves.

@mcburja72 I made the shelves you recommended. Next is the prep for paint. we still haven't got the exact color, but will be some shade of white on the cabinents.

The shelf extension looks good, and will look even better once it is painted. I see that in your 3D model you removed the "doo dad" from over the sink - Good!!. Again, the BM Linen White is a nice soft white that should work well.
