Mixing metals

I just found this bar cart and I really love it and need the storage. I am in the process of styling it and need to mix the chrome on the cart with the brass on the fireplace. I have other chrome pieces elsewhere as well as stainless steel appliances. I also need light on this side of the room and was considering a lamp. Perhaps the lamp should have some brass? Except for the tray and bottles that would need to be there any suggestions for styling? Or does it just not work. I can take it back. That is why the tag is still attached. Lol!

You do realize you can spray paint the surround to kook like chrome or have the trim professionally done to look like chrome and your problem would be solved.

We spray painted the gold on our fireplace black and it looks fantastic and was very easy to do.

Your chrome cart and brass look good together, especially with the gray walls. Just keep doing what you're doing with those two metal finishes. I think you'll have a really elegant room.

Spray it with heat-safe paint in what black - like the box itself. Then the slightly champagne mirror frame becomes nicer looking imo.

I think the surround doesn't help your look. The gold lamp becomes exclamation point among silvery items of mirror, legs, etc... I think it's best for one or the other used two-thirds... seems I've read that, and not half and half....???

Mixing metals is very interesting. I would move the mirror to above the bar cart so you'll have the silver/gold mix there..then something different above the FP. It would be helpful to see the other side of the room/furniture to give better suggestions. PS...since the bar cart will be "busy" I think keeping the art/accessories above the mantel minimal will be needed.

The bar cart is awesome and I would keep the brass trim around the fireplace. I suggest marrying the two metallics with accessories that have both finishes. Perhaps a gold sculpture or an ice bucket on the cart with bold gold accents and a cluster of bold candlesticks on the mantel.

If you decide to paint the surround, black paint looks good but the chrome paint never really looks like chrome. You could have it plated chrome and it's not that expensive. IMO the brass looks fine with the chrome.

I wouldn't put a lamp ON the cart, but a standing lamp to the side (the side away from the fireplace) if you need one. The cart is too "visually light-weight" to handle a lamp, IMHO. I like your mix of brass, chrome, pewter, etc. and think you will get a richer final look by using them all and not "choosing" to match everything. One thought would be to put a decent size plant of some kind at the side of the cart by the fireplace...something to ground the cart on that wall and keep it from looking like it's just floating by. Maybe in a fat round basket that you've spray painted one of the metal tones. It would break up all the rectangles you see looking at the cart and the fireplace. I love that cart; it just needs some oomph. Good luck!

I don't know about styling the cart but it's got great lines. I have different metals/metallic finishes throughout my house and they all blend together, but I think the brass trim on your fireplace looks a bit dated. I agree with others who have suggested painting it black. That way the metallic frame on the mantel will really pop and complement the chrome bar cart.

love that bar cart and think that different metals is fine. if that is the spot the cart will "live" in then a floor lamp or pendant would work. what will you put on the wall above it?

I would take the mirror from the mantle and put it above the bar cart. Then replace all the items on the mantle (looks too busy) with a tall chrome and brass vase with flowers that match your living room colors.

I'm sorry..... You said in your intro that you need STORAGE, yet this cart is being "styled" and can't realistically be used for storage. Since you love the cart, perhaps you could find another place for it and get a storage unit appropriately sized for that wall. That would also solve your problem of mixing metals. Sorry to be devil's advocate.

You should definitely keep the bar cart especially since you love and need it. I would try to find a mixed metal wall sculpture or mirror, if you don't mind having two mirrors that close. The mixed metals look beautiful together.

    Suggestions:

Move cart or paint fireplace surround black (fireplace and cart clash) brass fire screen then will look better.
Hang mirror on top of cart and this move will compliment the fireplace. Use mantel to arrange metal accessories etc.

Like suggestion given to place a floor lamp nearby cart.

Hope you like these suggestions and would like to see more photos of your room. Decorating should be fun and please the home owner first and foremost.

Most of the above comments are right on. Mixing is fine. If you look at the photos that erin posted you will see that the mix is not on the same line. Cart and fire place are on the same line. one does not accent the other. They are both big pieces.

To make it work I suggest painting the walls a grey

I Like the mix of metals. I would add a brass stand up lamp away from fireplace. Maybe add a brass and chrome planter between cart and fireplace or some decorative object that would be a conversation piece. You could always change the shade on the brass lamp too.

The cart in the photo that Genevieve posted is the way to go, especially the ice bucket. Maybe a cute chair next to it painted gray or white with a shimmery or beaded pillow on it. No black on the surround. It would throw off your silver and gold thing you've got going on. Not sure about the mirror above the fireplace. I think it needs to be a little shorter and wider. Also, some containers on the bottom for storage and it will visually weigh the cart down. I would be out hunting down a brass box to put on the bottom shelf, or a box with a lid to paint gold with silver hardware or vice versa. Try painting a stack of craft store boxes from Hobby Lobby silver or gold. That might be interesting if you use matte and shiny paint and sponge it on to give it a textured look. Hmmm. I may go to Hobby Lobby today.

My eye goes right away to the mirror as if it is not suppose to be there. The fireplace ,mirror and cart all have square sharp corners. In order to soften that I can see a round mirror over the fire place ( without all the other items on the mantle).

Thank you to everyone who commented. Lots of food for thought. I can't paint because I just did that! But I am thinking that there needs to be something with height. Not sure if I have room for a floor lamp as my dining table is only a couple of feet away.

You probably have enough suggestions to make your eyes cross! I like what ritting28 suggested and add this humbly. If you pick up the "echo" of metallics through artwork, you might create a hum that has metallics as it's melody, floating through the entire room. Here's a visual suggestion that has 12k gold on top and aluminum on the bottom. Other mixes are possible!

Beautiful cart! I love the look of mixed metals. It is much more interesting than everything matching. I agree with mirror suggestions. You could also accessorize with two toned bar ware, picture frames, etc.

Be careful of too much small stuff on the cart and mantel. The mix of metals looks great, but you are already have a bit too much clutter. Less is more.

    Simplify:

Whether you keep the cart or not, please consider painting your fireplace mantel/wood surround a deep gray. Right now, there is too much contrast between white surround & brass firebox. Painting the fireplace will "ground' your room as well as marry the silver/gray & gold/brass. The mantel area seems accessory heavy and the walls rather empty. I would work on balancing that.

Instead of a freestanding cart, think about (floating) wall shelves adjacent to the fireplace--perhaps over a narrow console (storage). The accessories on the mantel could move to the shelves.

Also, think about texture. (I see the shelves as rustic/reclaimed wood.) You want a mix of materials. Rough & smooth/reflective to add depth to your room

Every room benefits from a touch of black: Whatever lamp you choose, consider a black shade--lined in gold. Without seeing more of the room, it's hard to say if the cart really fits. I say, not. The cart does not provide much storage, seems too large for the room and competes with the fireplace. It's really pretty, but it needs to support your overall room. Right now, it feels like The Diva. I know how it feels to love a piece & want it to work. But, you want to love the room, too! Good luck, have fun!

What about painting the fireplace surround/mantle black and leaving brass??

I would look for something to work into the bar cart with a gold and silver or gold and black and carry on with that .

I love mixed metals in jewelry and decor. Consider a brass tray ON your bar cart?

I like mixing metals, it's very 'in'. I like the suggestion about the mirror above the cart. I'd do it horizontal to balance with the fireplace. I like the path you are on.

I love the mirror in erincarmondy's example.

Wow. I love what groveraxle was able to do! How did you do that? I totally get what you mean by simplify now. I will give it a try and post a new picture soon.

    Thank you!
