I wouldn't do laminate, I would DEFINITELY do a pre finished hardwood. It is incredibly practical, allows for area rugs suiting each child and their decor, without creating a patchwork effect of carpet , or even a "one carpet all over" scenario that will eventually be an arduous task to replace when soiled or worn beyond repair. I have ceased to carpet an upstairs (edge to edge) whenever possible.....it's just a total pain in the tush up the road, and "up the road" always arrives.

Oh, please stay away from laminate flooring! It's cheap looking and sounding, and is no where near as "indestructible" as the marketing claims.

Why laminate is touted for floors but vilified for countertops is a mystery to me. Hardwood floors are beautiful, natural, and can last for many decades. If they become worn or scratched they can be refinished to their original beauty.

Hate carpet and laminate. Ideal would be hardwood but otherwise LVP from Flooret (on Houzz, web). 40 mil wear layer is best in industry and large 9" X 60" planks look good and make quick install. Click lock. And can put rugs on top if you desire.
