Is it dried out end to end? If part of it is fresh, you can remove the dried out part and root the fresh part. Yes, I have done this. By the way, I thought I might be the only person to have this rose since most people have not heard of it!

It had partially dried out leaves,countrygirl. I trimmed the stem and plunged it into water first before rooting hormone etc. It is a gorgeous rose and such a beautiful cane it was. I wish I had spotted the wind torque off earlier. The cane looked so strong. I'll report back if it does root. I'm heartened that you think it was worth a try. Obviously, normally I would have handled the rooting effort immediately. Thank you.

Dried out bare roots can be buried in damp soil or sand to help rehydrate them. Perhaps if you did similarly with the partially dehydrated cane it might help? E. von Schubert contains a good dose of multiflora genes, making it good for rooting. You might experiment with the portions you don't feel comfortable trying to root by burying them in damp soil, perhaps with the top end of the cutting at or just below the surface, and see what results. Sadly, I am reporting the Excellenz von Schubert cuttings I tried to root didn't take. Of course the fact they were from a wind blown off branch I found probably 2 days old didn't help. They were already too far gone, apparently. My sister was visiting and my rounding on my roses had suffered. The cuttings from Moonlight and Prosperity seem to be rooting although were also broken canes from wind damage. They were found fresher and obviously had a better chance. I feel good about trying even though it didn't work this time.
