That island IS crazy. A peninsula would give you counter space, but not where you need it inside the work triangle... Or would it be a total reconfiguration?

A single- tier rectangular island would be what I would do.

Thanks Emily. We are trying to avoid a complete reno because the house is only 7 years old. Do you have dimensions in mind? I want it to have good storage.

Also, keep in mind the flooring -- it may or may not go under that island...

Yeah, I think it might be easier to slightly change the shape of an island than it would be to add a peninsula, which would require modifying or losing the tall cabinet. You would want to keep 42" aisles at a minimum. Re-using the current cabinets, you could have a 3' deep island.

Don't add a peninsula.. It closes off your kitchen to the great room if you want open concept.. Change the island to a straight one without raised bar.. Just have a flush breakfast bar. You could probably try to reassemble your existing cabinets yourself and turn it into a straight piece and remove the raised.. Only thing is you would have to get new stools and a countertop
