you run cords cleverly under couches to make the shortest run to an outlet in an inconspicuous place. not under a rug, never under a rug, but you can use those wedged cord covers that match your floor color.

here is my living room before cord cover... the lamp is over there on the left, cord makes a bee line under the couch and heads across the floor.

no photo after cord cover (sorry) but it looks a bit less like hell and no one is likely to trip.

right after you photoshop out your cord you can get rid of all light switches and outlets, cuz magazine homes never have those, either.
