Sofa pillow sprawl

last modified: 11 years ago

Instead of looking like this most of the time ...

The pillows look like this most of the time and I'm forever adjusting them.

They slip and slide on the leather and I'm wondering (before I go out and invest in them) if down-filled pillows would work any better since they tend to be heavier than the poly-fill lightweights I currently have.

We do use these pillows to lounge and recline on, but I want something that will stay put when someone simply sits on the sofa. Would down be better?

Yes, they definitely are better. I had the same issue as you, I changed out my pillows just for color and inadvertantly bought down filled and work great. They dont slide down and they dont seem to get as flat as other pillows and if they do flatten some you can just fluff them up. When I finally go pillow hunting for the sectional, down is the direction I am going!

Lots of fabrics slide on leather. I would use only two pillows, down, much larger than those pictured, and in a box style. You didnt ask (warning: advice creep!) but the existing pillow colors and fabrics don't do the sofa any favors. IMO you need a fabric with more presence, something weightier and that incorporates brown :-)

I dont agree about the pillow size, larger pillows would overwhelm the sofa.

Mine end up all over the floor, so you're doing better than I!

I don't use anything BUT down. The pillows not only look so much better, but they should sit up better on your leather sofa. I say "should" because fabrics can make a difference also.

kswl, I know the designers push the large pillows. Many of the blogs I read go with larger pillows also. I agree with that for some sofas. However, Jenn's sofa seems to have somewhat of a lower back and I don't think a larger pillow would work. Personally, I prefer the two pillows on each side.

Do you need pillows? I think that style sofa would look better without any. If it needed pillows for comfort I'd get ones that blend in, not contrasting, and of a shorter more rectangular shape.

I think I need pillows on either end sized like the one on the chair (which is the gold pillow that I borrowed and placed on the right side for the photo below). Maybe even two of those on each end, one sort of in front of the other? I don't think the ones on there now look right sticking up past the low back of the sofa.

Yep, definitely need pillow here as we often sprawl out to watch TV and the sofa arms need cushioning.

Pillows do tend to slide around on leather furniture. My mother ended up buying all new pillows for her family room furniture because it drove her nuts. It does help to get heavy down pillows, a heavy, non-slippery fabric, and a lower profile shape like the last one you posted. My mother went with heavy tapestry pillows with suede backs that were almost kind of sticky, IYKWIM.

FYI Ikea sells feather pillow inserts

I don't have leather, but do have sprawl and pillow clutter. :c)

On a serious note, I bought several of the PB feather inserts a few years back and they've held up really well. With as much as you like to change things out and experiment, if you don't already, you may want to consider covers and inserts as opposed to pillows. I love that I can change things out for holidays and so on. The PB covers are pricey but are heavy duty and work great. The outlet usually has some nice ones on clearance too....which reminds me, I haven't been in a while, it's probably time to go again!

If you can replace the pillow inserts in your current pillows, go to Cutting Corners on S. Hulen, and purchase their down alternative inserts. They are divine. They have the weight of down and a lush plushness that most pillow inserts don't have. I became addicted to these inserts years ago and will not use anything else. They have multiple size options. Check it out! :)

I've got pillows all over the place after a quick trip to Homegoods!

I really love these Ralph Lauren square size pillows. Here's just the two of them, and I don't think that's going to be enough for me.

These buff rectangulars match the lighter shade in the RL pillows.

The gold rectanglulars don't match exactly but I do like the way they pick up the color in the mica lampshade.

Also picked up a pair of these patterned lumbars. I know it looks like a lot of pillow to have these both on the chair, but the chair is so deep that leaning back into these two pillows is wonderfully comfy.

And not that I need my artwork to match the pillows, but this one really does go nicely with the horses.

Ok, I'm thinking I like this arrangement. I want the overall pillowed look to be inviting but not too showy.

Auntjen - Those Ralph Lauren pillows aren't working. Meet me at Homegoods @ Northpark and I'll take them off your hands. I just happened to buy the comforter set and need those pillows. haha

In all seriousness, which Homegoods did you get those?

LOL! I got them at the new HG off 121 at the Bedford-Euless border. And of course, I got the only two on the shelves.

You are BRAVE. You got out on a Saturday, on Airport Freeway, in the rain??! I bow to your courage. :D

(I like the colors you got, more cohesive than the ones before ... plus look more comfy.)

Frankly, I would get more like that tiger pillow on the coffee table. Several of those strewn about would be perfect, but definitely move that one to the couch. It looks out of place on the table. ;-)

Well, not really. I take the back roads from my house and I'm only about 5 minutes away from HG.

It's wonderful and horrible, all at the same time. I don't think a weekend has gone by that I haven't been there at least once since we moved here. It's ridiculous!

I'm supposed to be working but I'm not going to be able to do anything until I go buy me something. I'm off to Homegoods!

I just found out there's a HG about 15 miles from me, in the same town I get my hair cut. I've never been in one, but you guys all seem to score great things there. But, is it like TJ Maxx? We have one in my town and it's like Ross, but not as bad.

In spite of how well the lumbar goes with the painting, I think I have to do this instead. It's just more ME.

EDIT: Alrhough this one looks good with the throw I snuggle up with every morning.

My GOSH but I can obsess over things!

This new HG has some great stuff (pillows - decorative and bed) as well as nice tableware and interesting glass accessories. They also have a lot of overpriced junk. They move things around constantly and I guess like all HGs they have very limited stock. My store has several clearance aisles that are overflowing with crap and women are digging through it like they expect to find the Holy Grail in there. The store is so tightly packed that it's really hard to maneuver carts through the aisles.

This HG also has some rather indiscreet employees. One woman asked them to wrap a chair so that it wouldn't get all wet in the rain as she loaded it in her vehicle. A young woman working behind the register said loudly to her coworker, "What does she expect? SHE is the one who chose to go out shopping on a rainy day."

The woman who rang me up today got into a verbal skirmish with another cashier and ended up telling her, "Don't tell me how to do my job!"

I know they don't get paid much to work there, but I wouldn't put up with that kind of nasty snark if I managed the place. It seems to be pervasive in that store.

OTOH, I DID just purchase six down filled pillows there for $135 including tax so maybe I'll just shut it now. ;-)

Those Ralph Lauren pillows are perfect! A fresher look is three pillows----two that match (one on each end) and a third next to or in front of one at one end. I personally like just two pillows, four looks too much like you are trying to pretty up the masculine sofa. (Love the masculine sofa, lol).

Your new RL pillows look great on your sofa. Our tufted leather sofa needs better pillows also. I have only been to our local HG once and I don't have to go again. It seems like any store that is great elsewhere is crappy in our town. Your pillows would look great on our sofa!

But, is it like TJ Maxx? We have one in my town and it's like Ross, but not as bad.

Our HomeGoods is fairly new. Only been once. Got a great deal on a nightstand for dh. I'd shop there again, but have to be in the mood. Our TJMaxx and Marshall's are both pretty nice. Ross is in another category here.

Personally, I like how those buff pillows coordinate with the lovely belly fur of your coffee table decoration. :-) These pillows look so much nicer than what you started out with! Each update says more and more, "Welcome home!" Oh, and after having down pillows, I don't ever want to go back to the old fiberfill style.

Love all your pillows and your artwork! I do like how the pillows pick up the gold in your lighting and the colors in the paintings.

Where do you find your horse paintings? They're amazing!

Juddgirl, they were painted by a college art student named Nick Kirk. I found them at a local gallery and Nick delivered them to me, in the back of his pickup. ;-). This was about 13 years ago and I don't know if he is still painting but I have often wondered.

What a lucky find! I'm always looking out for interesting equestrian artwork and I love the colors in yours.

Thank you so much! I learned today that Nick is still painting and doing other types of art installations, so I was pleased to find that out.

And just to update that we has guests today and the pillows were leaned upon and they stayed put! Hurrah for down!

Is there a difference between feather down pillows and just down pillows?
