Sorry I must have missed this comment! We created this custom for the homeowner, who is short. She could have the typical size island, but roll out dough at her own level.

I can understand that, IS folk; creating a lower-than-normal, slide-out work surface is great for those of 'challenged altititude' or in a wheelchair. But for someone of normal height, or a tall man (YES - I want my husband to be comfortable when he cooks!) it would produce a pain in the spine. What is needed in that case is a slide-over unit for the prep table or island. And I have never seen one. But you can bet when we design our kitchen, with an end-grain wooden butcher's block-style prep table, there will be such a thing.

I disagree with the fact that the pull out island is unnecessary - to make more entry room into my kitchen, my plan is to do just that, all the while having an island I can use in front of my stove or my sink, ingenious. I love it!

Ummm...I didn't say a pull-out island is "unnecessary". In fact I said I'd like one. I simply made the point that building something that is too low is bad for the back. Correct working positions and counter/ surface heights are vital in a kitchen - unless all you plan to do is reheat take away food in your microwave.

IS made it clear that the homeowner, or at least the wife, is short and needs a lower working surface, which would be more comfortable to work on and not be "bad for her back" either. I'm sure they didn't imply that everyone should have one if they don't need it...

I agree that “right height” counters are so much more comfortable for work. Being taller, I even find reaching to the bottom of the sink while washing dishes gets to my back.

I love the idea of a roll out island for very small spaces we have an 800 sq ft casita love this idea in a space where you don’t have room for an island but want one.; this gives you flexibility to remove it when not needed!
