It depends in part where you live. In the subtropical area of South Florida they are very convenient and handy.

I'm a real estate agent and my father is a builder and developer... Ceiling fans are absolutely not outdated. There is a style to suit every decor, these days! What is more of a consideration is your ceiling height. Ceilings that are 9' or higher, allow the fan to be discreet -- and with very high ceilings it helps to push warm air back down in the cooler months. (reverse the rotation, of course!) :-)

Fans are definitely in style-just do not put them in kitchens or over dining room tables.

Thanks for the feedback. I live in the south, & they are nice inside & on the porch too! It seems like so many of the interiors featured on houzz do not have them

Fans themselves are practical, especially in warm climates. However, they aren't visually terribly appealing which is why you don't see them in too many high-end projects. But many of those have central air and other air-filtration systems that alleviate the need for one. That said, there are many styles of fans, so they aren't "dated" per se unless the fixture has been up for 20 years. Just like any light fixture - styles come and go - so fixtures should be replaced periodically.
