Hello, here are some examples of small kitchens and the
lighting we used to improve them. The first example has a combination of recessed
lighting, under cabinet lighting, and pendant lights while the second has pot
lights, pendant lighting and track lights.

To make the space work for you until the reno perhaps you
could consider a combination of under cabinet lighting and a track light. Under cabinet lighting is readily available
with batteries for easy installation, however for long term use we would
recommend LED strip lighting that is hardwired in. The ceiling will likely need to be addressed
when the existing fixture is removed, so I would consider that before replacing
the lights.

It seems like kitchens have so many lights! Is there any one fixture that can replace a flurorescent light or do I need more since the fluorescent light is so bright? I'm trying to minimize the work I do now, while still getting rid of the hideous eyesore I have!

Track light with at least 6 spots. Undercab lights. If you have only one light source you will be working in your own shadow.

Go for some LED undercabinet lighting. They usually come in very standard sizes so you'll most likely be able to reuse them after your kitchen renovation in a few years. If you get low voltage you can even use a plug in transformer if you don't want to rewire again in a few years, then go for a hardwired transformer after everything is done.

Assuming you won't be changing the plumbing and location of the sink in front of the window, you could put a recessed light there in the mean time. Once you do your renovation you could pick some matching pendants for over the sink and an island or peninsula.

For the fixture that you have there currently, check your local lighting store. I know we carry many LED options to retrofit into fluorescent fixtures. Depending on your budget, you could go with LED bulbs or a whole new LED fixture if you really don't like the look of the current light. You can choose what color temperature and lumen output would be best for your space as well.

The company I work for has several different LED flush mounts, that are pretty affordable. I'm not sure what your style is, but they give off a ton of light.

What you can do to fix the bad lighting is purchase decorative lighting panels. These panels diffuse the light so its not harsh, plus the image on it opens up your area.

Search Skypanels. They have quite a nice selection for a decent price.
