We get complaints here from people who have recently bought homes with painted counters and they are not happy with them. It is a short term solution at best. If your countertops are in poor shape, look into stock laminate countertops at home center stores. These stock counters are very low in price and are reasonably attractive. Since they are "stock" you can see them right there in the store. They come pre-mitered for corners. They do need to be cut to the right length and you will need to have your sink cut out and re-installed. I am using these counters in my basement kitchenette and the cost will be less than $200 + labor and plumber.

mmg... Years ago my husband and I started to paint our tile counters with "tile paint" designed just for that. OMG... we got about 1 foot into it and it looked so awful we quickly tried to remove with gasoline! It was pathetic. We are actually pretty good DIYers and painting counters was a bust. We decided to live with the tile/grout until we could replace.

If you hate your counter, just get an inexpensive (but beautiful new laminate). It is worth it.

We just renovated a rental property and bought beautiful in-stock countertops from The Home Depot. They look like really nice granite. We did the install ourselves but if you're not handy and your walls aren't square, I'd hire an installer.

It would be best to replace them.
