The good news is that what you have purchased is very flexible. You have the option to have the sofas face one another and the two chairs facing the fireplace.

Not crazy about the heavy appearance of the cocktail ottoman, but that might change with the right rug.

You do need to select a rug for the area.

Beverly, The ottoman is from our family room. I was using it to get an idea for size. It is 40"x40"- Do you think that would be too large for a table? I like the picture of the gray quilted chair - wonder where 8 could find it? Also, that rug looks kind of taupe-ish? Do you think that would look okay with gray? Thanks for your time and advice!

only four of your images came up...the two chairs and then two images of what looked like the same rug - kind of a Greek key design in a taupe/brownish color. I am going to a store that has sherrill and see if they have that chair so I can try it out! How do you think that chair would look with my brass fireplace

Yes I think the sherrill chairs would look quite nice with all items in your room.

I would center the layout on the fireplace and the ceiling fixture. I would replace the fan with a chandelier instead. Place a cocktail ottoman directly under the ceiling fixture.

Ladies, I ordered swatches for the ottoman from Williams Sonoma. Thinking it might be more practical for us if it was leather and then the chairs were velvet. I don't think I would want both velvet. I love the idea about the chandelier, however, if I center it over the table as it stands I would have to shift my couches pretty far towards the plain wall. Centering one couch in front of that window would work but the other one would be about 12 " from the wall. That really opens up the space but it might be awkward. I am posting a couple picture so you can see more of the layout. Thanks for looking!

How about some dimensions for the room and the sofas so I can do a layout for you. I think I can make the arrangement work being centered on the ceiling fixture and fireplace. What are you thinking about for your walls? Art, photos, found objects? Let us know What do you need for the windows?

You have a lovely spacious dining room that doesn't look finished. The volume of the room is quite large................have you thought about a more artistic chandelier that would take up more of the space above the dining table? Even the table looks a bit small for the room.

Some options for fixtures

Beverly, That table is 38"x84". It has six wood chairs and two upholstered host/hostess chairs. Current plans for that room are to get rid of that tall cabinet, possibly replace the sideboard with something bigger, redo the upholstered chairs, replace the light fixture, and amp up the artwork in there. That room is 12'x16'. It is across from the living room -separated by a 62" x 11' open area. Yesterday I put an 8'x12' rug under the table to see how it would look....I'll add a photo of that

Table looks too small, and I don't know what to say about the upholstered chairs and the polka dot rug. All nice pieces, but not sure how they will interact with the living room which is open to this area.

Beverly, The living room is 15' by 20'. The fireplace juts into the space - 30"x80". The couches are 80" long. At the window end to the living room are two French doors that we don't use.

can we go back to the LR for just a moment please? I know i am probably alone in this, but if I were to have that living room? I would do it a little differently, I would put the one couch on the wall to give room. I would have the other couch on the other side so it would be looking out those lovely big windows, If you have the room, I would then take the charcoal chairs and put those on either side of the fireplace for reading and tea in the winter. or on the window side for morning coffee and newspapers on sunday.

Or maybe, since this is backyard? i would do a bench in front of the windows and someplace nice to put ones shoes.

I also like your original idea of an etegere.

Thank you both! I love your ideas. Waiting for swatches from WS for table. If I do the table in light gray leather and nail heads what should I do with chairs? Also, nailheads - should they be brass like fireplace? Moving the china cabinet is a unique idea, Beverly. However my fiancé hates it and I don't think a color change would suffice!

Let's pull all your elements together so you have a plan to make all your decisions. Are you going to order the Sherrill chairs? What about rugs and drapery? What about the ceiling fan? Which layout for the room and can you basically place all the furniture in the right locations and then photograph the room?

Here's a layout similar to yours with a lantern on the ceiling, drapery rods on the back wall and almost full height drapery panels.

Beautiful room already! Just wanted to suggest that the spot next to the fireplace would be good for a narrow desk to sit your laptop on. We never used our formal living room until we did that.

This would be a nice desk next to the fireplace.

Pc mom, That is a nice idea and I like the desk in the picture you posted! I need something for that space that would help camouflage all the weird control knobs on that wall. A lamp there on a desk would probably work very well. Thanks for the suggestion!!

Simple sofa console tables (that normally go behind the sofa), can make very good desks.
