I think either could work. I know you didn't ask, but I'm not liking your throw pillows or the accessories on your mantle. They just seem to clash with the furniture.

#2. I think the first one is too washed out.

#1 with much darker walls, #2 with what u hv now

4boys2: Its from a ma & pa place here in town. I'll have to ask who their distributor is. :)

    #2 :)

K9arlene: the pillows came with the couch and were the original inspiration for the accent chairs. I agree, they need to be recovered. Any suggestions?

But, I like my mantle. ;)

I love #1 -- I prefer the muted look and it seems to match the chairs well. (I am glad you want to change the pillows.... !)

1st you need to choose a rug and then we'll vote on pillow fabric swatches! ;)

I would love no. 1 if it wasnt so washed out, so I guess no. 2, its brighter

    I vote #2

    Question added to original post.

(do these area rugs date my space? I love them, but don't want the room to look "old")

I think #2 looks more 'old'...

I've got to say that I don't love the rug over carpet look and think it looks a little fussy and 'old' looking in itself...

will you have a coffee table? I almost think a smaller rug no longer than the width of your couch under the coffee table would be something I would be more interested in...

do you not like the carpet? or are you trying to protect the carpet? quite a few yrs ago I had a family room with w-w creamish carpeting and it was getting filthy near the coffee table- I had young kids then. I got a small rug (~5X7) for in front of the couch to add color and to hide the mess... I had to get a very heavy wool carpet because our carpeting was plush and it wouldn't lay flat...

This is a very low pile carpet and this is a rental home. Everytime I walk in my front door, I feel the furniture is just floating around. I want to anchor it. Here is a stock photo of my coffee table:

Both of them work. The first one is better if you want to play up the color of the chairs. The second one is better if you want the room to have more of the brown tones. Personally I like the first one better.

I have a rug very similar to #1, so of course I love it. But in your room I like #2 with your furniture and existing wall to wall. Since it is a rental though, you might want to think more long term. Which rug would you prefer when you don't have the wall to wall carpet underneath?

Number 1. I love the muted colors, they don't scream for attention. And the size creates a living room. The other is just a rug.

Don't like 1 at all. To me, I don't get muted - I get faded. That combined with the chair just looks old to me. With rug number 2, I don't get that feel.

I personally prefer #1 because #2 to me looks too ordinary and too brown. However, I think if you go with #1, your accessories shouldn't have bold colors. I recall at one time you were looking at more contemporary rugs. Have you changed your mind?

#1. It goes best with your chairs and the rest of your room. It's subtle but present if that makes sense.

K9arlene: I was and have not completely changed my mind. I've gotten so bogged down with categories and "rules" that I've started trying everything. I've looked at almost every Houzz photos for transitional, Mediterranean, and contemporary living rooms for inspiration...truth is...I love something about each one. One thing I do know....I love my couch and I love my chairs. So now the question is: how can I keep the room young without being too trendy??? HELP!

I prefer 1 over 2 because I prefer its colors and think 2 looks kind of old.

However, what about some of the rugs aktillery posted, either her dining or living room rug (or butternuts), or something along those lines?

I don't really care for either; they look too staid to me. I love your chairs--they're fresh and young--and those rugs just seem to contribute little to your overall look. I would much prefer a subtle graphic or allover design for your room, like below.

i agree with deeinohio, not liking either one. first one is ok, 2nd one, I've seen a million times., i do feel they are old looking., i would keep looking , sorry.

feet to the fire, i would choose #1., i would rather have the muted rug and accessorize around it then have #2 with the bold pattern....

    Good Luck!!

I think number one is lovely and looks wonderful with your chairs. Number too is also a beautiful rug but the color looks off to me.

It incorporates all of your colors, but is it too much? I'd like to see something more transitional/contemporary in your home.

My vote for now is no rug, and first to explore if there is another solution to the

'floating feeling' besides a rug on your carpet. Otherwise, of choices shown I really like the softness and color of #1 although not sure if it pays well with the pillows...makes the focus on your beautiful chair/furniture rather than "here's the rug".

[Designer [(https://www.houzz.com/photos/orange-and-brown-office-transitional-living-room-new-york-phvw-vp~325626)Houzz identifies it as David Hicks Hexagon pattern. A Google search shows Onekingslane has had it in the past, but I don't know how long ago . It's a great rug, isn't it? And, a great room

    @deeinohio,

YES! A great rug and great room! I, too, found the designer and eventually came across a seller located in NY, I think. It's one of those "please call for pricing." But it's great and I'm willing to see how much it would cost. I like it because the design is small scale and interesting as it is a hexagon design. I've also considered a small scale diamond pattern. What are your hthoughts?

#1 absolutely, but I would turn it around 180 degrees so it shows darker. The way you have it the lighter side is towards the camera. You"lol be amazed at how much more colorful it is when viewed the other way.

i think a geometric would be more modern. Maybe a sisal geometric that would also add texture.

I think #1 looks faded and old. Out of these two, I would pick #2. I agree with the others who say more of a modern geometric pattern, and also a smaller rug just in front of the couch.

I had a third rug they brought to the house and finally opened it up last night. Is this too light against the couch? (The half of he rug, at the bottom of the picture, is folded over)

#3 is my least favorite... I like them in order that you show- #1 best, then 2, then 3...

the reason I like 1 so much is your chairs really look great with it!! I agree with kswl- try changing the rug position- might make a difference! also, maybe play around with your furniture positions so they don't look like they're 'floating' so much- the coffee table will help too!

I dont like the third one at all. I think because it is on top of the carpeting. If it was on dark hardwood floor, it would pop against the floor. I agree with the others, you need a smaller rug. I would like to see something with more color. I think atkillery's rug would look good.

Where is Atkillery's rug? I didn't see it above. Thanks!

And why a smaller rug? I like having the front leg of all my furniture on the rug while also leaving a few inches on each side of the sofa.

I dont have a photo of her rug, but look up her posts, she has included a photo many times.

I'm not a fan of rugs on rugs but to me, and this is just my opinion, a smaller rug just for color would look better. If the rug is too big, it looks as if you are trying to cover up the rug you have underneath.

Sorry, I agree with some of the others .... I don't think any of those rugs add to your room, they just don't have any life in them.

Those are such gorgeous rugs, nosoccermom! I didn't realize that we were "allowed" to vote nay on both of the rugs originally posted - but now that others have done so, I must say that I don't think either of them are ideal. The third rug that has been brought out for trial is also a no-go, IMO. I'd love to see one of akt's rugs (that nsm posted pics of) 'shopped into the OP's room. They are so deliciously pretty.
