Dining Room Update

I need help updating my dining room without spending a ton of money. I have a cherry table and chairs. I decided to replace the table with a new rustic-looking one thinking I could use it with my old chairs...and added two leather chairs. But it just doesn't look right. I also have a horrible buffet that is OUT. I have a new one on order. Should I return the rustic table and just use the original cherry table. What other changes would help? Don't mind the ugly buffet and the clutter on top of it.

Thanks for your advice, I am not good at this!

I think the first issue is the cherry stain of the chairs does coordinate well with the stain of the table. also, the chairs are too formal for the table. I can't really tell much about the stain on the table, but it looks like it has yellow undertones.

I would recommend finding chairs that have upholstered backs and seats. if possisble, the wood on the chairs should have yellow undertones or painted to coordinate with the table.

the simplest solution would continue using the table that matches the six chairs. then, find two new end chairs that coordinate with the formal table and chairs unless you already have two more cherry stained chairs besides the six chairs shown.

Keep the new table and chairs and shop second hand to replace the cherry chairs. You might do some bartering with them.

I think you should consider a better quality classic chandelier with a soft brass finish to coordinate with your existing furniture.

What kind of style are you going for? Are you wanting to stay in the formal traditional, or are you trying to branch out into a contemporary style?

I would like to move away from formal traditional more towards transitional (I think that is what it's called...)

Thanks for your comments! I have a short time frame in which I can still return the table if that's what I am going to do.

Anne Slone's chalk paint is an easy way to update your chairs to suit the rustic table (which I would keep for a more casual room) and link below may help - take a look at their cream bedside table or the light green glass front armoire, you could duplicate and change the fabric for a brand new chair. I have cream chairs with a harvest table and it works well. Good, solid chairs can be $200 and up, unless you purchase second hand, so this may be a good answer. Then consider a new chandelier, rug and paint color once you've decided which direction you will head. If the leather chairs don't suit the look, you can always add white slipcovers. http://houseandhome.com/gallery/9-expert-tips-for-transforming-furniture-with-chalk-paint/

Your table is way too casual for the chairs. Sigh, tough isn't it! Do you have an inspiration room to segue off of?

Here is a dining room with older Duncan Phyfe dining set. To modernize they selected a medium bold color and upholstered sleek Host chairs and then kept everything except the wall color the same. Such an easy fix; you could change out your chandy to a sparkle design; Home Depot and Lowe's are bringing back the blingy chandy in their display areas at very reasonable prices. Just a though where paint gives the biggest bang for your buck!

I agree with other commenters about the table being too casual.

Paint the walls a darker color. Warm neutrals or something cooler like a greige (very versatile).

Install roman shades with draperies. The pics below are neutrals, but don't be afraid of color or pattern.

Consider a cord cover for the chandelier.

Replace or reupholster the head chairs.

you need some contrast with the chairs. I would return the leather chairs and opt to paint the others or slip cover them in a lighter tone. The scale of the table and the light fixture aren't meshing well. If you are going for a more rustic feel the light fixture will really pull that together for you. also try putting the art from over the buffet on the wall the mirror is on now, and totally remove the small side table that is there. it is under scaled.

there is nothing wrong with your sideboard, if you painted it and changed the hardware, or only changed the hardware it would work. I would save that money for new chairs, and a light fixture.
