Vintage Yellow Tile Bathroom

This guest bathroom is the only room in my 1898 Colonial Victorian home that I haven't redone. Other than the window shutters, it's exactly the same as when I moved in 15 years ago. I'm looking for advice on how to work with the yellow tile if possible. It is in good condition and I don't want the expense. I'm open to a new floor, the white tiles are shot. I don't know what to do about the walls, I hate the medicine cabinet! Please help!

Well, I'd start by taking down the wallpaper, which will make it easier to visualize. Then decide whether you'd like to keep it simple, say all yellow and white or yellow/white/gray, or add another color, say a fresh green to go with the yellow.

I think newer white tile (maybe with a texture) or marble-look tile to catch the feel above would be great. I'd suggest a plain paint on the upper part, maybe a white or very light gray, and then a colorful shower curtain. Then get rid of the medicine cabinet and outdated light and find replacements that cheer the place up, maybe something like this:

I think this will be cute. Let me rustle around for some other inspirations.

Yes, I agree with acm about taking down the wallpaper. Also, going with a yellow and white bath would be so refreshing after looking at the busy pattern on the walls for all these years.

If you wanted to re-paper then just a yellow and white stripe or print with a black and white tile floor.

Thank you for all the ideas. I'm energized and excited to get started after all of these years. I'll be sure to post the after shots. I'm thinking simple white paint will be a calm relief after all the years of wallpaper, but the pattern above is pretty.

Have you removed tile before? I haven't, but we have taken up a lot of old floors, and I think getting it up around the edges without chipping the yellow tile could be a challenge.

I think the pale yellow tile and the vintage design of your bath is charming. I would recommend changing the wallpaper to maybe a matching stripe, changing out the floor tile if necessary and installing a more vintage medicine cabinet and vanity light to bring it back to a more period correct style.

i'd stay away from wallpaper. especially trellis design...it'll be outdated before the glue dries. my vote is for simple white. i do love the color of your yellow tile, and the layout. i would go for a smooth floor ... marble or faux marble tiles without indented grout lines.

I agree with many of the other commenters that gray and yellow are a great color combination. Paint the walls gray and choose a patterned shower curtain. -or- replace the wallpaper. Hayley has an excellent point about the floor. Is the floor tile broken or chipped, if not perhaps a thorough machine cleaning and new grout might do the trick.

That's actually a charming bathroom (minus the wallpaper!) It's those pink tiles they used to do that are just... *shudder*. Have fun with this project, I'll be curious to see your After photos!

A colorful bathroom is fun to work with in a Victorian house. A white framed medicine cabinet would work fine with a new light fixture. Many surface mounted medicine cabinets are on wayfair: http://www.wayfair.com/Medicine-Cabinets-l631-c215040-O7484~Surface+Mount.html

However, if you remove the current medicine cabinet, you may find that there is already a cabinet-size hole from previous installations of recessed medicine cabinets.

Good point on potentially damaging the yellow tile removing the floor. I'll discuss with the tile man. Unfortunately there are a 2 small cracks in the floor tile, I would love it to go. All the beautiful ideas, I'm now torn between gray walls and white walls. I thought I settled on white. Decisions, decisions.

I've replaced two bathroom tile floors and kept original wall tile with no problems. One project was with original 1910 subway tile. They can add a new tile "baseboard" if necessary.

Go with white walls and accessorize with grey, starting with the shower curtain. I had similar yellow tiles in my last house and replaced the floor with marble mosaics that pulled in the yellow, but mixed with other yellows.

Follow up...Not all of my walls were tiled so yellowish floors made sense for mine...might be too much for your floors.

If you really like the wallpaper, I would say you should keep it. I would suggest you replace the white floor tile with a royal blue tile, like the darker blue in the wallpaper. Then, I would suggest you get towels in white and in the light blue found in the wallpaper. You might also get some small accessories with light blue in them, such as a white scarf with blue embroidered flowers for the tank lid, a light blue drinking cup, and a light blue vase for a small white floral arrangement. If there is a window, I would suggest a white valence and also a white bath rug or mat.

I would do the grey/yellow combo! The tiles are actually lovely if you can look past the wallpaper.... Its the perfect yellow to go with grey :) with a new cabinet, new towel hanger and shower curtain it will look great!

I'd do a smaller size patterned floor...perhaps a mosaic or a visually patterned floor. And I would recommend whites and greys. Maybe play up the Victorian in a new modern way...like a dynamic wall finish. Polished nickel finishes. Good luck!

I also have a bathroom with the pale yellow tile (1957 ranch, Atlanta, GA) but the ceramic soap dishes, towel rods, etc are a deep grayish blue and the floor is blue/light blue tile. It has wandered away from the 50s with numerous changes. I'm pretty sure the sink and toilet were blue but that was before my time. They are now white and non-50s-ish. There's lots of yellow (wall tile, all four walls and high up in shower) and white (shower floor, window trim, medicine cabinet, ceiling).

So I'm about to take it back with blue walls. The blue is a lighter version of the blue ceramic fixtures. I have cool new modern lights. Chrome and glass... sparkly! And a more 50s looking pedestal sink. I have two prints (will choose later...) to make faux roman shades with (I already have white blinds). Adjoining small dressing room will also be blue but it has a lot of white. May add some pale yellow to it.

And there are good sized windows in both the bathroom and the dressing room; it's nice and bright!

You have a great 1950's self back sink. I love those.

    1) When was your house built? If it was built in the 1940's to 1950's you can look to guidebooks about bathrooms from that time period to keep the bathroom in keeping with the era and playing with the yellow, white and grey theme.

If your house is from an earlier time period and you are looking for more of a classic black and white theme and you will replace the yellow tile at some point in the future then I would say your floor tile options should be one of the following.

Black and white spiral tile, black and white hexagons, basket weave tile, porcelain not marble for the basket weave

I would love to hear an update on your bathroom remodel. I have a yellow-tiled bathroom and just had repairs done. Now I'm looking for the right white paint. I saw a lot of recommendations for white paint on this thread, but no specifics. Anyone have a specific white they think looks good with vintage yellow tile?
