The newer variety "Angel Red" grows a bit shorter than the other varieties, typically 8ft. It has noticeably softer seeds, is sweet and has a nice mellower flavor. The adjective "angelic" really is kind of appropriate to describe the taste. While Angel Red has been commercially marketed as "an exceptional new variety of pomegranate", the only thing actually exceptional about it is that it is the best variety among the early-bearing pomegranates varieties.

I also have an "Austin". This variety is less common and originated relatively recently from breeding some select varieties from Syria. The pomegranate fruits are very big and supposed to be good for making wine, it has a high juice content and very sweet.

I tasted an excellent variety from an Indian market (I suspect it was an Indian variety, not Parfianka). It had the most intense flavor, dark juice. The acidity was hard on my teeth and stomach (I mean to the point where I only felt like eating half the fruit at one time), but it didn't really taste incredibly tart. thanks....I will continue looking. Of course, part of the challenge is finding nurseries that have a good supply of different varieties.

I am planting an eversweet and a parfianka this Spring. From my readings, it appears that these two are excellent tasting with completely soft seeds.

I think those are both fine varieties. Know this....the eversweet fruit is pale pink on the outside and nearly clear seeds. The parfianka is supposed to be an excellent fruit and somewhat of a dwarfed shrub/tree.

Mollar de Elche is a very good cultivar :)

The fruits on my 'Austin' variety pomegranate tree began ripening about 10 days ago (maybe the very start of October, Southern California) and they are really really good.
Several were given to friends and neighbors and they raved about them, said they were the best pomegranates they had ever tasted.
They are even better than 'Angel Red', and I would say literally twice as good as the common 'Wonderful' variety.

The 'Austin' pomegranates are sweet and very flavorful and juicy, and soft seeds. There was barely anything in the seed to spit out. (Or maybe it just seemed that way because they were so good)

I would highly recommend this variety.

This is also the first year that the tree has produced.
