You really should take all the pictures with the table in place if you're keeping it. I think that will make a huge difference, and it's risky to make a decision without. I suspect that neither of the rugs with a medallion type pattern will work with the table

My vote goes to number one also. The rugs are looking traditional and the table looks modern, so switching one or the other might look more complementary. Since these rugs all have a frame, I would like to see how they look with some of the rug tucked under the couch with the table then centered on the inset square. I am assuming you will want the table to be closer to the couch (like in picture 1)

You're probably all right, and I'm finding my "coup de coeur" (photo 3) a bit dark this morning. Last night it was good with the lights on, but day time it's not a sunny room. I'm not sure now if I shouldn't go back and look at more "all over" rugs, and choose again, it's a bit too red for my liking.
I really like nomad rugs, as suggested, but husband doesn't and we're not into flower patterns either...

With the table you have, I do like how it matches with the lighter tones/border in rug #1.

Since you're still in the choosing phase, I'm going to be very frank and say that I didn't like any of the 3 rugs very much. The plain one is the best of the lot, but I don't think the colour works that well with the floor. It would help if we could see the rest of the room, but I somehow think you might do better with subtle blues or greens.

This is the rest of the lounge, you'll have to excuse the "lived in" look! It's Sunday after all!! It's all quite beige at the moment, but I have a white cover for the sofa and two sets of covers for the chairs, one in navy blue with light flowers and one in red with white flowers that I put on in December for Christmas. What do you suggest?

Wow, I don't like any of those rugs. It looks like your furniture is white, why are you picking a red area rug? I would stick with neutrals in the beige/gray family, and I would get away from the white slip cover on the couch and those white curtains. And I would get a more substantial coffee table.

But I still think those types of rugs (minus the flowers) might work well. I also think it's best to avoid a medallion type pattern, or any rug that has a clearly defined center, as it will certainly make furniture placement (especially with the coffee table) trickier.

It's hard to tell from pictures but the rugs look too small. The front legs of the sofa should be on the rug.

Looking at the table and the colors in the room, I think you need to look at contemporary rugs, not the more traditional ones you've got here. Accent the table with a geometric patterned rug, and pick up some fun colors while you're at it! Here are a few ideas for you to consider:

It's lucky (cpaul1) that I'm not easily offended! I'm buying a rug, the rest of the room is staying as is and I like the table and the curtains and the sofa (beige) of which is darker than in the photo. I like the pottery barn rugs, but I find them a bit wishy washy, I like the bolder tones of a traditional oriental rug, but right enough I find them all a bit too red. Husband likes red, doesn't really like bold designs, and doesn't want floral... As for the size, I prefer the "all off" and don't want the sofa hiding part of it, it's not good feng shui either... But that's another story!

I'm no professional, but I'd stick with the first choice you have. I also get the idea of using a pop of color to offset the neutral colors you have, but not certain if the pattern of that rug clashes with the table. :-\. I dunnoooooooo

You're right. They are a bit wishy washy! My personal taste in rugs tends to run that way (I prefer to think of it as "subtle and subdued " lol).
Well it sound like it will be tricky with the red/no red/not bold/not wishy washy opinions having to be considered! But I wouldn't "settle" if I were you. There are so many choices out there, I'm sure you can find something you both love.

I like the one with the blue accents because it gives some direction for accessories in a coordinating color. But I agree with the other posters that a medallion is not the best option with the coffee table.

Oriental rugs are quite an investment so I agree you should hold out for something you really like both on its own and in the room. Hopefully it's something you will have for a long time that will transition across any future homes/spaces.

You need a larger rug for the room.

Here is a Karastan Rug that might be a good compromise. It is on Ebay. Are you wanting a reproduction or a real Persian rug? One thing, you can get really nice Persian rugs at estate sales.

I think with your honey colored floors and cream furniture you need a very deep red rug like a Bohkara. They have an all over design and look good with transitional and contemporary interiors.

Oh, and you can usually find a good sized one at a nice price too!

I like the first top red rug because......it has not center pattern that cries out for symmetry. I think the non pattern will serve you in many many rooms if you elect to change them out. I also think the pattern enhances instead of competing with your cool cocktail table.....that is my vote!

All three from the first choice have been returned. I still love the 3rd photo... But husband doesn't. The one without the middle pattern does look good, but I found it too red, especially in the evening. We have another choice of two, one is a gabbeh and the other more traditional. The traditional one I have taken a photo, you'll have to wait for the gabbeh, we haven't tried it yet.

This dark border looks much better with your floor. Because you have parque it tends to add more pattern. The darker less busy border looks better.On the other hand the medallion center with the coffee table does not work so well. It is too small anyway. An all over pattern would be best for this space.

This rug is lovely, but it still has a defined centre - that sort of rug works well in a dining room, where the table IS centered, but not usually well in a living room. I agree a bokhara type rug might work really well. I also think the rug should be larger, and the fronts of the sofa and chairs should ideally be on it.

If you don't want your furniture on top of the rug at least get a rug large enough to meet you furniture. These are all way to small . Just try next size up.

Another choice, this time it's a Gabbeh sort which is very thick, and a cheaper option! Any thoughts??

Coming late to the debate but the Gabbeh is my definite favorite out of the ones you have tried so far.

I LOVE the thrid too. But, I totally agree with belleburgmaggie that you need a larger rug for the room. I would go with one of the serapis she found on ebay.
