I feel these chairs don't quite match the understated elegance of the rest of the room. You could use some pattern though, but a more subtle one would be better.

I would probably put 2 stacked smaller pictures(small so they can be centered) on the left side and same on the right or a single larger work to avoid symmetry.

I think the chairs look good. Sometimes decisions are made based on need, price and availability.

tqtqtbw: Not a column. It's an cased opening between kitchen and eat in area. This is taken from the kitchen.

I agree with nothing on the walls by the window. I do like the chairs. The scale is perfect. Try finding a similar cushion to put on the couch.

It looks like you have a leaf in your table....would it be round without it? If so put your table more in the corner between the bay and the patio doors. Put your two chairs around the table....Use your square cubes as a coffee table in front of your sofa. Light fixture might need to be draped over the table if it is in the corner. All of that would open up your pretty bay window.

Thanks for all the advice. The gray stools are there for extra seating and are also used as footstools for the couch. My kids sit on them if they are not sitting at the island. They are also really useful for seating when we have people over. The bay window is also used for seating around the table.

I saw these at World Market, but think that it might be beige overload.

The chairs do look like an after thought. If you want to add a pattern to this space, I would go with a smaller scale for those chairs. They take away from the over all look of the room.

The herringbone chairs are better (and one of my favorite fabric patterns), but you have to be careful with too many different shades of beige. Make sure that they have the same undertone if you go that route.

They are very nice but those plates need to be moved from the top of the window .

The plates must stay. I took down a curtain rod that my husband carefully put up a few days before. I didn't want to deal with the repair work so they are a coverup. They stay until I'm ready to sand and paint. And who wants to do that?

I like the chairs. Maybe move the cubes in front of the couch with a tray on one to act as coffee table when not using them for seating.

Beautiful space. I think the chairs add just the right amount of pattern and design to your room while still keeping things neutral and calming. I actually love the cubes and think they are great to have for extra seating.

How about we share an image of one of our designs? Perhaps that will help.

i think i'd like the cubes better in another lighter color, but i agree you've done a great job with a limited amount of space.

Very pretty room, the chairs don't appear to be dining chairs to me. The slope of the back is more like an occasional chair you would have in a bedroom.Are they comfortable to sit and dine in?
One more question, none of my business, but why the very large picture window in the kitchen, could it be changed to french doors out to your yard?

I really like the plates and the two chairs and that area looks really pretty. You have had a lot of comments, so not sure if I read anything about making the table smaller to hide the gap and just extend when needed. If you added a cushion to the window seat for the extra seating you need, could you find other spots for the ottomans and only add when needed; I think it will look much nicer as the space fills a bit crowded.

@Maureen: The table is somewhat temporary. I bought it on Craigslist for $20 to see how an oval shape would work. It' the right shape so I plan to get a pedestal oval table made at some point. I could probably add some more cushions to the window seat.

@Sandyc: The kitchen used to be the living room hence the large picture window. It is unusual to have in the kitchen, but the view of the woods is beautiful and we wanted to keep it. I also think it gives the kitchen a unique look. Here's the view in the winter.

No the chairs are not too "busy" for the space. You need some pattern in the room.

When the kids are older, we'll probably make the space into a mini family room without the table and eat more meals in the dining room. The space would look better if it were just a table and chairs in the center, but we absolutely love having a couch on the wall. Function over form at this point. I like to change rooms around depending on our needs. Thanks all for the comments and recommendations. I'll live with the chairs for a few more days and decide.
