I'd say it depends on the look you want, as well as your budget. Most of the quartz products are very expensive. Granite can be much more budget-friendly, depending on what you choose. If you want pure white, with soft veining, it will be almost impossible to get that look in granite, so you'd be better off with quartz. Speckly or black granite is very easy to find, as are brown, red and tan colors. As far as practicality goes, granite is very easy to care for, and extremely hard and dense. Quartz manufacturers claim that it is bullet-proof, but be careful--it can and does chip and become water-marked. Also you cannot put hot pots on it due to the amount of resins in it, which can melt from heat.

There's no substitute for going to a showroom and actually looking at slabs and samples. It's the only way to know what really appeals to you and whether or not it fits within your budget.

I agree with Rapp and suggest multiple showrooms/granite yards, you will find a variety of prices and selection. Have fun choosing something you love!

Quartz is maintenance free which means you only need to clean with soap and water. Granite needs to be sealed every year (at least) in order to prevent any bacteria from forming in its pores as well as to reduce the risk of staining from things like red wine.
