Patchworking rugs?

We have a big living room and right now have an 8x10 rug that fits in the sofa group in front of the fireplace. There is a lot of hardwood still exposed which looks ok but I'd like to find a way to cover more of the floor with rugs for a few reasons. 1) I want to loosen up our living room a little. It is pretty formal but I think it borders on stuffy and I want to make it feel more comfortable. 2) we have 2 85# dogs who have torn the hell out of our floor. When we moved in last year the floors were pristine and the PO told me that the floors hadn't even seen shoes on them in 30+ years. Ugh.

I saw saw this tv show, Master of None, and the one guy had a bunch of oriental rugs just patch worked together on the floor. I loved it. Have been trying to find examples online with little luck. Have you seen this strategy? What do you think? Do you have examples I can use for inspiration?
