I'm working on a laundry room that is in my basement.

The house was built in the early 90's. The laundry room has wood paneling on every wall, and then drop tile is installed on top of that paneling. So replacing the paneling isn't a cost-effective option for me.

The paneling has several large holes in it, though, where the previous owners apparently decided to run additional outlets. So I'm trying to devise a way to repair that and make the room more up to date, but without spending a lot of money.

My first thought was to mud the heck out of the whole room and then paint it. That's cost effective, but a lot of work, very (very) time consuming, and probably still won't look "great". I've done that before so I know what to expect, and I'm not looking forward to doing it again.

My second thought was to buy slat wall, then just mount it on top of the existing paneling. It would look good, it's paintable, and highly functional. The problem is the price! Slat wall is around $160 /sheet (plus shipping), and I would need 12 sheets! That's way out of my budget.

My third thought was to do the same thing with peg board, but I've seen pictures and I'm not in love with the appearance.

Can you all suggest a 4th option? Or better yet, a way to have the look and feel of slat wall, but for a lot less money?
