Hosting TG - I think I'm getting sick!

Woke up with a sore throat, headache and my back is achey. A lady sneezed right on me at the grocery store on Sunday. She didn't even bother covering her face and I just stood there looking at her, as if to say "really?"

So what to do? Cancel now? See how I feel tomorrow? Muddle through it? I have no one to help - Mom is out of town and I don't know anyone else who's coming that's capable of cooking. I have a kitchen full of groceries! I have a ton of work to do today so I can't pre-cook anything until much later. Oh crap!

    Well. Okay then.

Ugh, this is terrible! The few times I've had a large gathering planned and then gotten a bad cold, I doped myself up with MucinexD, washed my hands obsessively, and let the show go on. Not fun, but I'm not sure what other option there is. Now, if it had been a stomach bug, I would have made another option. I hope you're feeling better very soon, like before tomorrow. Hang in there!

How did I miss this thread? I have been here countless times and did not see it. How do you feel today? Is cancelling a possibility? Or postponing? This happened to me last year with a twisted knee from all the prep work, but I had someone else come in and do the day-of work. Do you have a fever?

Oh no! What a nightmare. How are you feeling today? Fingers crossed it didn't turn into anything full blown. Gargle with warm salt water multiple times a day. Drink plenty of water.

Between now and next year, you need to make friends with and invite someone who can be your sous chef.

I just saw this too! So sorry you are down with a cold. Probably too late to start with Zicam, but gargle as much as possible and take the Mucinex. I'm a believer in Nyquil if the cold is worse tonight. Do as much as you can today to get ahead and then get a good night's sleep. How many are you having? Maybe you can scale back a dish or two if you're not up to it and just make more of one.

Oh no! Feel better! Are you expecting a lot of guests? If it's a cold, I would still host. So sorry that something that is already stressful will be beyond stressful!!

Oh I am so sorry to hear it! I was sick the entire week before a party last month. I scaled back just a bit.. removed a dish that would have been tasty but was superfluous (I still regret it-- but it was necessary) and did my best. No one missed a thing.

Hopefully the cold hasn't ramped up and you are feeling much better today.

(I didn't see this thread either.. and I was on the site numerous times yesterday!)

I don't know what options there might be but I wouldn't subject guests to getting sick. Can you do a TG raincheck? At least let everyone know beforehand so they can decide whether they want to risk getting sick. No one appreciates having people pass their germs to them when it can be avoided. I would feel terrible if everyone came down with my cold!

Also consider if there are any elderly coming.

Take cold-eeze...it really helps shorten the length of a cold as the zinc is an immune system booster.

Also, try to minimize the story...the thoughts...all about how is this going to go and what do I do and I don't feel well and I'll get everyone else sick....let all that go, and just focus on what it is you need to do right now...worry about the rest later. That will help reduce your stress which will help your immune system to function better and keep you feeling as well as possible.

    Hang tough!

Hope you're feeling better today, Magdalena. Sometimes I think I'm coming down with a cold because I wake up with a sore throat but then it disappears.

Weird that this thread was hidden. I know I would've seen it if it was here. Is that what your second post was about--you thought nobody cared? :(

I too didn't see this thread until just a little while ago. I'm sorry that happened, ML! Also sorry that you're feeling poorly, and hope you quickly recover. Being sick on a holiday is no fun at all.

That doesn't sound good! Hope you are feeling better today.

Hope you are feeling better! This happened to me about 5 years ago. I had so much planned for Wed and I woke up with a really bad cold. I wore little plastic gloves to work on the food, but on TG day DH and MIL had to clean up because I had to go lie down I felt so lousy.

Aleve-D helps me with symptoms and it has the stimulant.

I didn't see this thread yesterday either. I hope you are feeling better today, or if not, that you have access to good meds!

I can commiserate as I have a cold too and 1 of 2 of my best kitchen helpers has the cold as well but we are not hosting this year. I am doing what I can in bursts, I may eliminate a dish or 2 as well. Hope you feel better quickly.

    How are you doing today?

I wasn't ignoring you either - just didn't see this before.

I hope you're feeling better today. Drink lots of water and take cold meds.

Hope your dh or someone is able to step in and help. Or have you decided to cancel?

Looks like the thread isn't showing up in your Activity lineup for some reason. May be why people didn't see it sooner.

If you have a fever (thinking flu), then at the very least, tell anyone coming that it is at their own risk. Or, cancel.

Some people are put in great peril if they get the flu.

If you do have the flu, or assume you do, you are currently contagious.

I hope you feel better. What a terrible time to get sick!

WASH THOSE HANDS AND DON'T TOUCH YOUR FACES EVERYONE!

Sorry you feel crummy. Cedar allergens are staying to kick up so could be what you're feeling.

I hope you power through it ok and can collapse Friday! Or get to veg at least!

Hope you are feeling very much better today! I have been sick for a week-cold turned into brochitis. Ugh. Good thing son and sweetie invited us to their place this year. It will be cozy with both families and we had initially planned on holding it here, but they decided they wanted to do it. Perfect! I think I will make it, but thank goodness the whole thing is not up to me!

    Enjoy your day, ML!

I hope all went well for your TG Mag!

Ah, thanks everyone! Yes, it all went great. I had three guests with the same sore throat so we decided it's allergies. I feel ya Cyn, anytime between now and about February, I'll get bronchitis - happens every year. I starting taking Singular in October so maybe I can avoid it this year.

Akt, nice weather don't you think? The humidity was so bad I couldn't get my cream to whip!

I am allergic to mold and have taken shots for years (different series). Magda, I bet singular will help. I took it for quite a few years for several months each year. It is supposed to be good for mold allergies. Do you get weird dreams with it? I had sinus surgery a few years ago and started on another series of allergy shots (for mold only this time) and I have had a good couple of years. I have never had bronchitis, although I had gotten to the point where I would have wheezing, etc. each fall/winter from the mold. Sinus infections. I no longer take Singulair. Seems like every year I will have a time where I get the tickle in my throat, irritated bronchial tubes, etc. and do a round of steriods. I hope to avoid that this year! Glad you had a good Thanksgiving and hope you are feeling much better today!

I also get sore throats and feeling of a cold and a low grade fever from allergies. As you know Mag, they are terrible around here. Ugh!

So glad your holiday was fun!

The humidity was so bad I couldn't get my cream to whip!

I finally caved in and turned the a/c on last night.
