New furniture delivered...hate it.

My kids were sick of sitting on the floor and my husband hated our PB couch. Time for a sectional. Decided I'd have a designer help...off to Ethan Allen I went. I should have gone with my instinct. It does not work. I'm so sad. Hid in my bedroom so I wouldn't have to look at it.

Not sure what all I need to do. Paint change is a definite. I'd like to somehow do wood or veneer all the way up fireplace. No idea what to do on all the wall space. My sweet husband and kids even said it looked bad. The ottoman is just wrong. The chair is too orange. ugh! I'll decorate for Christmas and then start working on changes.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to return the ottoman... Haul it to the store and bring it in with you. Be ready with the time and dates of your contact with your sales person. Go directly for a manager. If they wont go for a return - maybe they will agree to get you a snug custom slipcover? Bring an assertive friend if you are nervous. Good luck!

And, I love the sofa and chair! The advice you are getting should make it great :)
Love your sectional! Pick a nice paint color then get busy!

If ottoman gets lots of use by your dog, it is in a practical color now and looks great with your sectional. Is it leather? If I were you, I would keep it.

Love what Groveraxle has suggested in her latest rendering. If you're able to negotiate an exchange with EA, that Emerson ottoman would definitely be something to consider. Or if not, perhaps they would agree to re-upholstering your current ottoman with that same (or similar) fabric? From what I can tell in your photos, that fabric color helps to tie it in with your current wall color as well as your chair. Love the Kuba cloth pillow too. :-)

btw, I tend to agree with tedbixby that you seem to be drawn to warmer colors and undertones. Thoughts so far on any of the previous suggestions?

I think the biggest difference you could make to the room is putting in grayish color stacked ledge stone all the way to the ceiling for the fireplace. It would break up the wall color and balance the couch color. I would change the ottoman to a circular rich leather. I like groveraxel's pillow ideas, but maybe a lighter shade/same color on the walls.

Here are a couple more ideas for inspiration, I would still change paint color to something not as saturated. It overpowers the room.

    Reclaimed wood for fireplace

Ethan Allen used to take returns, minus a 15% restocking fee. This may have changed but this used to be their policy.

    @girlscotti: it's been a few days, how's it going?

Short term, I think an afghan over the ottoman will help.

This is an easy fix! To start - I think it is important for people to understand that salespeople at a furniture store are just that - salespeople & shouldn't be confused with with a professional Designer.

That being said, there are two things that jump out in the photos. It looks like the ottoman is throwing everything off. The ottoman is a silver-gray with a blue base & everything else has a warm base. The rug looks like it may not be the correct colour as well; hard to tell from photos. Lastly, the white baseboards are wrong for the rooms! Otherwise it looks like a nice comfortable room.

Suggestions, paint baseboard same colour of walls. This will draw your attention into the room & out the windows - not have your eye drawn immediately along the bottom of the walls.

Ottoman fabric needs to change to a warmer colour base. Lastly, the room needs some pattern to add some personitally, this can be done by replacing rug with a large pattern (could be abstract) that ties-in all the colours in the house.

These few quick & easy changes will totally change how everyone feels about the space & won't break the bank. Don't stress over it & enjoy the Hoildiays!

Holidays have taken over...sorry for late reply. EA "designer" is coming over tomorrow to evaluate. I'm not holding my breath. With kids and holidays I've been cooking and decorating...but I believe in what most of you have stated. The ottoman is the odd man out. As is paint color. Still not crazy for recliner but will make it work.
I will keep y'all posted after my meeting tomorrow. I can't thank you enough for all of your wonderful messages and suggestions. I really appreciate the assurances!

I can't believe you salesperson suggested that ottoman! The scale and the color are all wrong. Also, did the sofa not come with pillows? That could add some great interest. I hope you have luck with EA.

Good luck tomorrow. I think once the ottoman situation is solved, you'll like the room much better!

Good luck! Love your sofa fabric. We're also moving from beiges/browns to gray in our living room (slowly as we can afford it), and I know how frustrating it is to bring new furniture in when you've got older items that just don't go.

I like your recliner as a camel accent - I'm planning to do something similar. I'd suggest making sure you repeat the camel color in the room - in patterned pillows on the couch, a camel throw, and I liked the idea of layering another rug. Cow hide rugs (real and fake) are all over right now and would tie on nicely with what you have. And, as others have mentioned, changing the wall color will really make a big difference in how the room looks - and the furniture in the room.

I agree with the majority of posters. It is the ottoman that is the biggest problem as the color simply does not go with the sofa. I like the fabric of the sofa and it is a very classic design, so I don't think there is anything to regret there (and obviously your cat loves it!). But Ethan Allan needs to admit that the ottoman is a complete misfit--both color and style--with the sectional and at the very least exchange it for a more appropriate one.

I think the wall color is just a little dark . I would paint the walls a lighter color and definetly change the ottoman . Sofa fabric you can work with by adding pillows . Good luck on your project , it will all work out and you will love your room. Ps. I would keep an ottoman especially having kids and for feet to prop up on . You can put a nice tray on it and use that for your glass etc. and yes even the dog will enjoy the ottoman at times .

Did your designer source these choices?
Very unusual for an interior designer to source from Ethan Allen, or was it an in house " designer" aka furniture salesperson? Out of all of the fabulous fabrics out there, the ottoman is not complimenting your sectional. And as stated above, new wall color would help greatly.
Update: "designer" came over yesterday. She thought it looked fabulous but was missing the "layering". Kept talking about how I had too much warm and needed more cool. Out of the car came tons of items. She came to SELL me more! Bright yellow/ocre vases, silver starbursts, black and yellow leaf pictures...it was just too crazy. Wants me to paint 2 different greys in the room but to leave the fireplace and wall alone.

Obviously I hitched myself to the wrong star on this one folks.

She did give me the option of restocking at 35%. I'm going to take the hit on the ottoman for sure. Still deciding if its worth $ to return the chair (I overpaid). Also, the dining rug I chose will not be in until February! Isn't that nuts?

Oh dear, sorry that meeting didn't work out better.

I agree that the ottoman is wrong. The color and style, though trendy, both seem to be off. I would have a table of some sort rather than that huge tufted piece. Who wants to clean around those buttons anyway?
If you are going to cut your losses on the ottoman and pay a 35% restocking fee, they have already made a bundle on you.
I highly suggest hiring an interior designer now. She can help you draw up a plan to work around the sofa. No need to buy any more Ethan Allen. Trust me, using a designer will save you from these design mistakes and save you so much money. She can source from many, many different vendors, much better quality and lower in price than a retail store like Ethan Allen. They have a ginormous markup on mid range furniture, just like RH and the like.
Don't buy any accessories from them either, that is just so wrong. This lady was trying to cover up her mistake by selling you more stuff! Unbelievable.

Perhaps you could take your pictures to EA and speak to the store manager and get that restocking fee waived on the ottoman. Or contact EA online and send pictures.

Unbelievable With a dissatisfied customer and they try to sell you more ! That is ridiculous You need to now go higher up in management and insist they take this back It is not the right color or design for your sofa or room Honestly , the are suppose to be professionals When they give you someone who is just so called a designer it is time for them to something about this I would keep insisting and discuss what had happen. Personally I would get a hold of the corporate office And tell then exactly what happened and they tried to sell you more. That is just a complete joke. And yes , she knows it doesn't look good! She gets commission on this sake and really made some bad choices on yours. If you have to get a slip cover made for it in the end I would do that. But don't give up , they need to stand behind their design experts. Don't let this ottoman get dirty or they will not take it back for sure ! I know it is the holidays , and I'm sure they hope you just go away. It will all work out I promise !! just keep at them

    Is the ottoman leather ??

You will get the same feedback from everyone on the ottoman so don't give up just insist they change this at no cost of yours and give you a different designer. Hope that helps with information from all if us. Good luck Don't get stressed by this life is to short. They will eventually do what is right thing for their client.

When you speak with EA next, ask to see any credentials the "designer" might have. I'll bet they won't be able to produce any. It might help to get the restocking fee waived. They totally misrepresent their staff.

The ottoman is the biggest problem. Do you have another room where you could put it?

Would you be able to cancel the rug order? I mean it is not even available until February so how can they claim it would need a restocking fee? I do not trust anything you chose under her tainted leadership. Or has the rug been approved by the Houzzers already?

I would probably go with a warm white for the walls, like BM White Dove. Once the walls are painted and the ottoman reupholstered (try geometric pattern with an accent color), then repeat the accent color with a few pillows on the sectional, the room will come together.
To me, it looks like the sectional and chair might go very nicely with the walls. But the greys of the area rug and ottoman are an entirely different color scheme. Perhaps before you do anything major, you could try removing those two items (rug and ottoman) and see what you think? Perhaps the grey needs to be replaced.

If you stick with that color of walls which is nice I just think a lighter version of it Or completely change and do a off white. Color. Sw Dover white or other whites as mentioned The ottoman is a lot of $$$ and I still think you need to work on the store replacing it Just keep us posted

Maybe getting pillows with the ottoman color and sofa color - in it. And a different rug That may work also. Houzz people - depending how your project turns out will start putting things together for you at a budget Let's just wait and see what Ethan A. Does for you ! After the final outcome you will get a lot of ideas. But the cheapest will be I think having a slip cover made and some pillows But lets all wait and see what the results are. Just don't give up !! It will work out if they want a happy customer and Houzz people to ever want to shop there again at Ethan. Keep us posted !!!

I personally want to thank every one from Houzz All of you are a Blessing And Merry Christmas to All

I like the furniture, I would just update the wall color to tie it in better.

I strongly agree you should raise hell with EA..Any updates?

The wall color has too much yellow in it to blend with the sofa. The bagel color from SW would work, but I would go one step lighter on the color card. The ottoman is not worth keeping, but I would be adamant about not accepting the 35% restocking fee, since the "designer" is the one who picked it out, not you. Go right to the manager, and don't let the "designer" "help" you anymore. If you can't get the restocking fee negotiated, then insist on a refund instead of a store credit. If they are still insisting on a store credit, then go to the higher-ups in the company--even the president if necessary.

I think you are over reacting. All rooms need to be developed. You just can't throw in one big piece of furniture and expect your world to change. Sometimes you have to change more than one thing and sometimes it takes time to do these. In defense of the designer---you ultimately made the decision. I sold high end furniture for 13 years and I can tell you that no salesperson or designer wants problems. I also have a degree in interior design from a major university. Believe it or not, most people try to sell you the right thing rather than having to deal with a dissatisfied customer

I love the sectional, but I agree with Nancy Walton ^

Rebecca Hicks, I don't agree with what you have said. Yes rooms need to be developed. But, when a person orders two big pieces, to be placed together, they should work. These two don't.

I think we all know what the problem is. It is obvious Hopefully EA will take care of this for her. I guess we will all wait and see what the outcome is.

    last modified: 10 years ago

If EA doesn't take care of it without a charge then they are being foolish and short sighted. It is not good publicity for one of their "decorators" to be exposed as incompetent AND for the company to drop the ball on customer service.

Pictures can be deceiving. Do you have the names of your fabrics/leathers? Paint colour too if you remember it?
This is EA serene platinum. Might be your sofa fabric? Exact names would be helpful in guiding you.
Personally I love your new furniture and I'm sure a few tweaks offered on this thread will help bring it all together. Merry Christmas!

Don't panic yet...the ottoman has to be exchanged with a dark chocolate or espresso one. Once the Christmas tree comes down, start with a new paint color on the walls, then take another look at your furniture. You might be surprised! Right now the orange chair competes with the wall color, but it will be a pop of color on a neutral backdrop. I'd suggest a warm grey on the walls. Good luck. EA should be cooperative with any returns/exchanges you might need to do. (hint: keep kitty off the sectional until you know you're keeping it)

I like the couch too. consider using a light taupe paint. Taupe can be a gray base or a brown base, so compare the two to decide your preference. I would consider using a print or plaid stripe with the brown and grays of the couch in it. Your home looks nice and comfortable to me.
Do you mind if I ask you what the style name of the sectional is and if you are generally happy with the quality even if not with the specific design choice?
Thanks. Hope it worked out for you btw

It doesn't fit the room. Ask a manager from EA to come to your home.

Cause a scene in the store on Saturday afternoon.
