You should search for a list of local appliance service technicians (google, yelp...), see which ones have the best reviews or seem the most trustworthy, and call them. Most companies should be able to service GE. Where are you located? Someone in the same area might have a good recommendation!

You didn't cite the model number (Profile is a marketing name, not a model number) so I can't check parts diagrams. Could be a bad thermistor (temp sensor), or a wonky controller board, or an airflow door stuck open.

PSI23NCPACC. This is a single-evaporator unit. The fresh food section is cooled by airflow from the freezer section.

There are several temp sensors, any of them could be bad and throw the system off-kilter.

As mentioned previously, the airflow fan/damper control assembly can also be at fault, not closing or shutting off to reduce the airflow when the setpoint temperature is reached. Interestingly the description for that part WR49X10091 at one of the online sources advises it has been "updated to prevent freezing food in the refrigerator."

It might be really hard to answer, I know: but is this likely
to be a really expensive repair?

I was surfing new refrigerators online, and most side by
sides have ice and water in the door, which I don’t want or need. We only use
ice in the summer, and same thing for cold water. This unit came with an icemaker, but I only
turn it on a few weeks in the year. If this is likely to be a very expensive
repair I might just have to bite the bullet and buy a new one, though I don’t
want to, and this unit has the features I like without too many bells and whistles.

LOL, I searched for a long time to find one without an in-door ice & water dispenser. Thought (seemed like) I was the only one who did not want those features.

Mine was a floor sample! Abt at the time said they could not sell a fridge without an ice and water dispenser. Oh, and stainless steel does not work for me either. A big block of silver color in a room full of oil rubbed bronze and warm colors would not go. Mine accepts door panel inserts, and I stained and varnished ones to match my cabinetry.

Glad they changed that policy. :-) It was the only one I found.

Avoiding ice and water dispensers eliminates a lot of your repair potential so you're ahead there. It has been years since I've called for appliance service so I have no direct reference for costs.

Proper diagnosis is required to confirm what's at fault. The one part of question runs $107 to $127 at three online sources I checked (there are more). I don't know how those online prices relate to service prices. Plus trip/diagnosis/labor costs. On the whole this should be a "minor" repair, although I expect the cost may run up to $250/$300. I would go ahead with it if it was my refrigerator. That's still much less cost than a new unit. One may consider there's a warranty on a new refrigerator, but a one year warranty is nothing to trigger excitement.

mdln, I meant that Abt said they would no longer offer refrigerators that were not equipped with ice and water dispensers, because no one would buy them. They were very happy to get rid of my "dinosaur" floor sample, and gave me a terrific deal.

When I am in other people's houses, and I see ice and water dispensers, 4 out of 5 times, I am told it is broken.

Yep, that is what I thought you meant.

Fortunately, whoever told you that was incorrect; they sell this model and it is on the floor. They did not offer to sell me the floor model. Was installed ~14 months ago. (My mistake, had builder install it [rather than Abt] and builder did not put the door back on right, which is what Abt found & fixed.)

Since I bought mine a long time ago (years), it could be that they once again began to offer ones without the dispensers. Maybe more people requested them afterward. Beats having customers leave and buy at another store.

I to have a PS123NCPA CC model. Coils get covered with ice about every 7 days. Circuit board tested ok, am in the process of replacing all 3 of the thermostats. Hope that cures it. The bypass door may be next if no cure.
