liketim I have a sapele mahogany top from Sprague and we use our kitchen hard. We made a decision when it was installed that we wouldn't baby it-we wanted ours to be a working, albeit beautiful, kitchen. It has worked out great. The Waterlox finish is an excellent barrier against water and stains. With heavy use we have sustained only light scratches which disappear with a little mineral oil, and we will be able to renew the finish with Watelox whenever we need to. I couldn't be happier with it!

Curious, is the overhang supported somehow?

Beautiful, my dream kitchen has wood countertops, which will see a lot of use.

@liketim0.......Unfortunately we completely disagree with you concerning the need for refinishing tops because of water damage...actually we have never heard of this before or experienced this, as long as you apply the appropriate finish and maintain that finish every 7-10 years! Although wood tops are not as durable as stone when it comes to scratches and dents water damage is not an issue. Wood tops are extremely durable and functional in the kitchen and their beauty is unmatched by any other counter top product. There is no need to wipe anything off immediately with a tung oil finish....use it like you would use any other countertop you simply can not cut directly on it.

Below is a picture of a mahogany vanity top that is two years old and is in a house that has five children ranging in the ages of 5-18 (I am quite certain that they are not treating this top with kid gloves and it gets use everyday with an undermount sink!!!) The homeowner shared this with us because they can't believe how durable the product is, A Waterlox tung oil finish is the key! Sorry @liketim0 you are wrong on this! I don't think this top looks like crap at all!

@aries61......there is no support to that overhang, it is not necessary for such a small overhang. We generally do not need or recommend overhangs unless they increase to more the 12".

@sprague....Thanks Redoing my kitchen and was thinking about doing a walnut top on a freestanding peninsula with a 12" to 15" overhang that is why I asked the question. The overhang shown is 12"? Thanks

Yes that is a 36" top on a 24" cabinet base.....1" overhang in the front equals an 11" overhang on the other side. Generally speaking if you are using your overhang for seating 10"-12" is sufficient. On a free standing peninsula like yours the only concern I would have is on a 15" overhang someone leaning on the edge and actually tipping the peninsula forward (make sense?) The peninsula cabinetry should be secured to the floor somehow. Hope that helps and btw .....walnut is gorgeous choice! Our number one selling wood product.

@liketim......no you can not directly put a hot plate right off the burner on a wood top but you can't do that on a laminate top either.....you may get away with that on stone..... but stone has other limitations. You have to think about wood tops like wooden boats...they sit in water all day and you don't have a problem with the right finish. The key is a penetrating oil finish not a lacquer finish as you recommend, which only creates a shell on top of the wood. There is a certain amount of maintenance and care needed for a wood top but in all honesty the functionality and durability of wood tops is right up there with any other counter top product.

Great looking counter top!! Is the wood naturally water resistant or is it sealed? If sealed how do you keep it sealed and looking good?!

@ Carter....the top is sealed with a tung oil product from Waterlox. We apply 5 hand rubbed coats which should not need reapplication for 7-10 years depending on use and wear and tear. It's a very easy finish for the homeowner to reapply and food safe to prep food on.

@ Sprague...I might have used the wrong terminology when I was describing my peninsula. What I meant was that it is connected to a wall/floor, but not connected to any other cabinets. The attached picture shows what I meant. Curious what would a approximate cost be for a walnut top 55" x 36" ? Thanks

@ aries61......an overhang of 12-15" would not be a problem in your situation. I don't think it needs to be that big if seating is only on the right side but that is personal preference. I love those wood counter tops. One of my clients has a mesquite counter top on her island and uses it daily. It still looks great after many years of use,

We put in black walnut countertops in 2 sections of our kitchen. They look fantastic. Yours is gorgeous.
I wouldn't concern yourself with 'liketim' - I have never seen a positive response from him yet.

Waterlox is key, I had a walnut island counter with a sink that we did not baby at all. Just like any other counter I have had from granite to laminate to limestone to engineered quartz, I use cutting boards and don't put things from the oven on the counter. Walnut held up just as well as the other counters.

Could you share some pics of the underside of the island overhang, to see where supports are placed? I had a walnut countertop installed as well recently but it's already showing cracks, so I'm trying to look at other examples of how support should have been installed. Thanks!

Very nice I like the work you do, we have walnut and alder combined in the home I' am building. The Kitchen cabinets have the walnut on the facing, combined. Looks great. You have done a great job, and can you tell me what the finish you need on the counter top to last?! Actually walnut looks great with the lighter grain in it then the full dark walnut.

@crystalbathurst.....there are no supports on this countertop, sorry. The overhang on this top did not require any.

@Mountain Mt homes....the finish is a handrubbed waterloo finish. there are 5 handrubbed coats on our tops. This should be good for 7-10 years before a new coat is needed. Your live edge walnut mantle is very cool....walnut is our biggest seller! Thanks for your question.

The color variations are beautiful - I am a huge fan of stone countertops but this one is beautiful

@Sprague thanks, missed your comment on that earlier. We had 2 supports installed 24" inches in from the edge of our walnut countertop, and we're seeing cracks just after 1 month of very light use on both the overhang and on the base. Any thoughts on what the issue might be here?
