That's what lights do - on anything painted including walls. You can put the light on a dimmer or go to a very dim bulb and find alternate light sources.

Just a thought - you may want to try GE Reveal Floodlights for your can lights. We use them in our kitchen, it gives off a softer light vs. regular can floodlights. We have older stained cabinets, so it may not work as well on white painted.
