I agree Jillian, i love the shorter amounts of snow, it is odd, but if i drive about 75 miles away to wilmington area, snow is on the ground for most of the winter. Down here, when we are threatened with snow everyone goes to Social Security. Sometimes it was was worse than full moons. falalala

I love everything about it. Winter is my favorite season. The cold gives me energy - hot weather just exhausts me.
Nothing better than going outside and smelling that snow is on the way. Ahhhhh. ......

Hot cocoa, hot chocolate pudding, hot tea, chicken soup. Just put a hot in front of it - pumpkin pie, apple pie, fires in the fire place. blankets, showers.

Najeebah, did you know that it can get too cold to snow? I learned this when I was in college in Michigan. The colder the temperature the less moisture there is in the air. When the temperatures hit about a negative 40 degrees Fahrenheit the air is so dry that it normally won't snow.

Before i left FL, we had two, 1 month of slightly fall, 11 of deadon summer!

Sometimes, it seems there are so many rules to snow, it is amazing it snows at all. Then it does and you don't care about the rules!

Nothing. I love nothing about snowy winters. Thankfully, we get one, maybe two snows a year in NC!

Jessica, My earlier post I said minus 40 Celsius, and you in your last post said minus 40 Fahrenheit....lol...that is where the Fahrenheit and Celsius scale meet.
And yes, after a real cold snap, and it starts to snow, you know it's warming up outside.

Yip Jessica. Aside from warmer temperature overall, the humidity levels is one of the reasons it seldom snows around here. We're a mostly summer rainfall area, but some areas, particularly mountain ranges, do get much colder than where I live.
How do y'all survive? -40 somethings! its a really cold day for us if its -2ºC lol

Najeebah, the cold temperatures are usually short lived....-30 or more usually happen for a few days and that's it. I always say that if it's cold, you dress a bit more, but if it's hot, there is nothing you can do:)

Najeebah, where I attended college (Berrien Springs, Michigan if you want to see on a map) the temperature didn't always get down to -40F however the wind chills were often lower than that coming directly off Lake Michigan where the water cooled everything down. Generally speaking the college would make an announcement that you should not spend extended time outdoors and go directly from one building to another for classes due to the chance of frostbite. It was also the first time I heard anyone talk about the possibility of getting frostbitten lungs! The good thing about it is if you live in that climate year round, you grow accustomed to it and it doesn't feel as cold. In fact, you'll often see native Michiganders and Yoopers (short for U.P. meaning the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) running around in the winter in rubber ducks (a type of shoe), shorts, and a big down coat! (see photos below)

By the way - the postman from Michigan above claims not to have worn long pants in 20 years...

Personally, i think anything under -0 is not worth mentioning. it should just have a nick name like hc for hot cocoa, hmmmm, or ft for frozen tatas or..... this could go on forever. think i will quit while i am ahead. i do remember going to WI in february with #1 for our wedding party. the car never got warm enough to run the heater and i got deathly ill, i walked on about 10 ft of lake-wasn't told til i was out there, haha. I was 4 ft from the car in snow over my head, i did not think i would make it back in this lifetime. oh and my adorbs brand new specially sought after and ordered from the catalog in FL, because noone carries snow boots down there, blue snow boots-out of suede, got thoroughly soaked in about 5 minutes and nearly froze my feet off!

can't tell you how much faster that went in my head!

I remember times where we actually went for weekend holidays up to the mountainous areas of South Africa where it sometimes snows... as luck would have it, there was no snow that year.. we just froze our butts off :-p

havingfun, I've never been to FL and the reason for that is the weather:) I don't like hot and humid weather even though we do get here in the summer a week or two of high humidity:( I grew up in an area where summers were never warmer than 30 Celsius..I guess I got used to that,,It does take a while to accommodate to a new climate. I just don't think I would ever get used to heat.

Well, as have said, grew up in FL, i guess i take after the German half, because i never adapted. Odd thing, though many further north move to FL, locally, they all come back, they don't like it.

I've never liked the heat,,,I wish I could sit in a sauna for at least 10-15 minutes, but I can't..I can't breath in hot and humid environments...even the shower water needs to be just warm enough and not hot..I'm odd like that:)

same way, heater full blast in the car, but car window open. at least now i have a good excuse. lol

:) my favorite is opening the house windows in the winter to feel the cold air..even if I don't clean, the house seems cleaner with all that cold air:)

The only thing i hate about winter, is going places, i actually wear short sleeve tshirts under heavy coats, so i can take it off in the stifling Doctors offices, and sometimes even stores!

lol, havingfun, That's what I like about winter! If you have to run out for a quick errand in the winter, you can leave your jammies on, forget the bra and throw on the parka!

I live in WI and January is my second favorite month. I love the quiet stillness of winter, the snowy landscapes (if there is snow, winter can be dreary without it), the winter activities. I love going snowshoeing or skiing. I love wearing winter boots and a cozy coat. I also love sitting by the fire with a warm drink or cuddling under a blanket to watch a movie.

I used to not mind shoveling snow, but now we have a three car garage and that driveway is really wide.

What I hate is the ice and temperatures lower than -10.

What I don't like during the cold months is that I am tempted to eat more baked goods. I really don't want to have to hide behind those large coats and sweaters:)

I do know that it can be too cold for snow. There are also different kinds of snow. The best snow for building is during the warmer months, when it is 20-30 degrees. Heavy and wet snowfalls are great for packing and making snowballs, snowmen, etc..., but not so great for shoveling. The colder temperatures bring lighter snow with less moisture. Good for sledding, skiing and snowshoeing, but you can't build a snowball.

When it gets to -10, you can't do anything but sit inside and try to stay warm by the fire.

Several years ago, Ollies - outlet store, had a snow shovel with wheels. I bought one and loved it. once you got it under at the beginning, you just kept walking and it shoved all the snow to the side. Hubby did not really get the hang of it. he still keeps trying to scoop the snow. and of course i can't do any of it anymore. If you see one, it is great!

When I started college in Michigan, I was confused the first few snows about why people walked on the snow BESIDE the sidewalk instead of on the sidewalk - as the first winter there progressed, I learned why. The school had been designed with the steam tunnels running under the sidewalks - theoretically that was supposed to melt the snow so there would be less shoveling. In reality what it did was melt the snow which then froze as a sheet of ice on the walks. Then you'd see the entire grounds crew out for days with lengths of Rebar - lifting then letting the rebar slip through their hand and drop the end on the ice then lifting and dropping again and again to break up the ice while another guy came along behind shoveling it off the walks. I learned that although you can buy ice breakers for de-icing your sidewalks rebar is cheaper and works better because it has enough weight to smash the ice on it's own with less effort from the person breaking it.

This thread got me thinking about winter, and snow, and those of you who live in snowless places. A lot of Christmas carols mention winter, cold weather and/or snow. Do those of you who live in snowless places, or who live in the Southern Hemisphere where it is summer have specific Christmas songs with warm weather in them?

No, if we grew up there we would dream of cold nights and snow. i worked with a man from Delaware, for a lark, I used to decorate a palm tree for Christmas for him, with Flamingos and all things FL. He thought we were all crazy to be wanting Christmas trees and snow, all that stuff. Secretly, we all thought he was a little crazy. i don't know about southern countries, but except for a joke song or two there are no southern carols.

In FL we have a secret weatherboard, when natives get sick of the all demanding snow birds, we make it rain. Even my mom did not know what to make of this, she kept saying she never heard of it and had been there ever so long....I said yes, but that does not make you a native, does it? since my sister said the same thing, she would really get confused. Grew up in the Midwest and shoveled more driveways and sidewalks (ours and elderly neighbors) than I can count. Boo on snow! My kids love to snow ski so they drive two hours, ski, and come home. I never join them, done with snow!

Im not far from Shrews, and no stranger to snow. We love it. and deal with it. As long as we have are wood stacked, we are fine.

Nothing like looking out the window to a blanket of fresh white snow. And a white Christmas?! Ah...It doesn't get any better! Getting nostalgic now as we know this won't ever happen in Southern CA!

LOVE snow. One of the greatest pleasures (for me) is going for a walk at 2am. All the world is asleep and there's just something about the absolute silence...
