Does Myrica cerifera (Southern wax myrtle) grow there?

If not then maybe its Myrica pensylvanica (Northern bayberry), which I think is tardily deciduous, but much hardier. It will hold onto its leaves longer in mild weather and may actually be semi-evergreen much further south.

M. cerifera may survive up there, but would probably burn back in zone 6, I'm thinking. M. cerifera is truly evergreen (down to a certain temperature anyway -- maybe around 0-5 degrees F.).

Genus name may have changed to Morella.

It may be Morella, but you will probably find more online information about it under Myrica at this point.
