The Frankenstein Kitchen

So did anyone change their design midway thru construction or put their kitchen together by the seat of their pants? Did it work out for you?

I started out with a very strong visual in my head of the colors, shapes and lines for my kitchen. Most of that has stayed steady for almost a year until now. Due to budget, I've compromised or change out stuff and did it again today but on a huge scale.

I'm losing the dark stained 60" chimney wood hood that has been the anchor of my entire kitchen design.

I did it because I lusted after a Blue Star french door oven. I had figure that it would take me about 5 more years to save up for them after the remodel.

I dropped by one of my secret sources today to see if they have any good prices on a hood insert. Instead I found 2 brand new BS French door ovens that they would deal on for me.

I can afford to get my ovens now for the same cost as the entire wood hood by switching out my elegant chimney hood to this tubby roly poly one.

I have to hack this one and somehow make it look elegant by adding a chimney duct cover and framed build out in the back.

I also have to decide if I can live with two different color BS ovens. One is Burgundy and the other is stainless steel gray. Our cabinets are gray and espresso with blue Fusion fire quartzite on island and zinc counter for perimeter.

My poor kitchen now feels like a Frankenstein monster with bits and pieces of different things patched together.

That cohesive look that has been my design just blew up.

Beachem, have you contacted BS? I'm ordering from them now and was told that switching the "skin" (I.e. The color of the door panel) was an easy and fairly inexpensive change. Food for thought....

Oooh ooooh I love you. I hope that's the case. I'll call Blue Star tomorrow morning. My husband didn't care how the kitchen look as long as he gets his BS so I can cook steak for him.

He called me several times today to make sure that the broiler can produce steakhouse steaks. At the rate of our cost so far, before today, it was looking more like 10 years from now to get the BS ovens.

Have you had a chance to test drive the BS ovens? I'd recommend doing this before committing to them. Their ranges are incredible. However, I used BS Platinum ovens in a 48" range in a show room about a year ago, and was completely underwhelmed. (But, the platinum is a different type of oven, so ymmv.) The Platinum units heated unevenly. : (

I'd hate to have you totally change your plan if the ovens won't perform the way you expect. I'm hoping the French door style is a completely different animal. : )

I would totally do it if you can switch out the "skins". Also, I am a sucker for deals so if you are in CA, please PM me your "source". Pretty please?

Just gonna say that I think that hood looks kinda pretty!

@laughable, the wall ovens are a different beast apparently.

    @Vith LOL I know right?

@guco where are you in CA? I use a lot of different liquidators and sources.

Fyi it's easy to change out the color but they charge $400 plus shopping.

@look I haven't decided on that hood yet. I need the seller to go down a lot more.

I'm also considering this one because it has the dimensions I need. I just have to figure out how to create a chimney hood like this

    Out of this

Well, that looks like a pretty easy tweak.... I mean, except for the style & material, you're there, LOL.

Sometimes the best end results are happy accidents.

I was gonna say, just don't use striped wall paper ...

I think it was your tubby roly poly remark. ;)

    Beachem,

Yikes! $400 just for skins? Maybe a local person can help you source heat resistant paint? or is that too far fetched?

I am in LA but would travel for great deals :)

@guco If you're in LA, pm me with your email and I will forward Robert's weekly email. Call him to get on his email list. They just got a brand new shipment of Viking in this week.

    He's in Chatsworth I think.

The other locations are in Santa Ana including clearance center but you have to visit them in person randomly as shipments come in daily and they don't advertise.

Some of my liquidators uses EBay to clear inventory. I check EBay for their stuff then call for a hold til I can get over. However, the best stuff goes fast before hitting eBay so I check in person. A couple will tell me over the phone about inventory but the others are too busy.

I'm heading to a liquidator tomorrow so tell me what you need and I'll take pictures at that place.

These hoods are all really heavy looking...are you sure about that?

At 60" wide and 30" deep, it's hard to get an ethereal look on any hood. I'm not thrilled about their looks but it's a compromise because of cost. I'm spending the budget on the hood for the ovens. My oven budget is zero since we were reusing ours.

I plan to do alterations on the big stainless steel monstrosity to make it more attractive and when savings permit later, I'll replace if necessary.

On the other hand, it's hard to find a brand new version of the BS French door ovens I want at 50-60% off. These ovens were just delivered 3 weeks ago from BS and the designer changed his mind and dumped them.

Anyone know what a CD fridge is? @Guco wants me to look for one but I have no idea and I'm at one of the liquidators.

    Counter depth.

Thank you. The manager and I couldn't figure it so we thought a mistype for French door.

beachem, I am so sorry. I am just sitting down in front of the computer. Any good finds? ;) I hope you find the hood of your dreams!
