intro

I've been lurking here for ages, contributed some several years ago when I started a small house remodel, but never updated to the houzz log in till now. But since the traffic has lessened I figured I'd better pitch in.

My remodel stalled due to lack of funds, but I'm getting ready to start on finish work and hope to get it done this year.

My house is about 100 years old, originally a two room railroad tie type log with wood siding (that housed a family of 6!) A kitchen/bathroom was added in the 40s. The owners before me opened the original part up to one room, half vaulted, half loft. There was a free standing chimney and a ladder to the loft dividing the main room. I removed the chimney, but set my desk and tv back to back where the chimney was, which divides the room without adding a wall. Half is living/music room, half is entry/office/dining/parlor.

The loft had been my bedroom, but I had a new bedroom built on the foundation of a lean-to shed off the back of the house, increasing square footage to 680, not counting the 80 in the loft. The loft is now my weaving and sock-machine knitting studio, otherwise known as Wonderland.

I have finish work to do, somedry-walling, new floors throughout, new counters in the kitchen, install a washer/dryer and closet system, some finish moldings. I have a new carport, but would like to wrap the columns and install a nice ceiling and put a deck and pergola off the back.

Last weekend I rearranged my bedroom, which is 10 by 15 feet, with a 2 1/2 foot wall of closet on one side, so the bedroom footprint is 10 by 12 1/2. I've been wanting to put the bed angled in one corner. Tried a couple times and never got the angle right to have access to the bed from both sides and room to get past it to an exterior door. This time I got the angle just right. There's a narrow triangle on the right, large enough to get in and out, a wider triangle on the left giving access to the door and leaving plenty of room for a plant stand. And a big triangle by the door and closets, one of which will be the laundry 'room'. The room feels so much larger. Amazing what a simple change can make. I need to find a smaller nightstand. And I decided to take out a small easy chair I never used and maybe replace it with a small table or bench. I keep a small dresser in the closet, so there is no need for other furniture in the room.

You must be so pleased! Not having to use that loft for a bedroom would be huge for me, and the huge closet space you gained sounds awesome! In my new (old) place I've used a traditional night stand on one side of my bed and a narrow console chest on the other; it's 3 foot wide but only one foot deep, which suits my small bedroom well. That narrow chest has been all over the place in different homes - very versatile. Yes to pics - maybe before and afters, or in progress.

Not having to go up and down that ladder to get to the bathroom in the night is huge! Being able to get around to all sides of the bed to make it is huge. And ah, closets-they're the only ones in the house. They still need drywall, so right now they are just stuff piled in there, more or less neatly, curtains are wonderful for hiding disorder. There's a wall dividing the 10 feet into two separate closets. One will be laundry/broom closet and the other for clothes.

A little chest like you have gramarows would be perfect for the foot of the bed. A
spot to sit and put on shoes and socks and stash linens. I'll have to start
looking for one. I don't think I've ever seen one that narrow.

The loft didn't make a great bedroom, but it is perfect as a dedicated work space. Not too much storage space, so I can't get too carried away with stash. I made a list of all the things I wanted up there, and by golly, it all fit, but nothing else will, so I'm done up there. Apart from a few upgrades, but no rush on those.

Actually, I do have a sort of extra closet. I found a pair of large, heavy metal, nicely painted cabinets, surplused from a hospital operating room. Glass doors on top, stainless steel shelves. Painted a shade almost the exact match for my pink front door (it was from the natal unit). They stand in my carport and hold things that don't fit in my kitchen...canning, cheesemaking, winemaking and yarn dyeing supplies, plus tools and hardware. That emptied a lot of clutter out of the house and they aren't even full yet. I'd been looking for something like them for years.

I will take some pictures this weekend when the light is good. If the light is good...it's pretty gloomy here, but nothing seems to come of it....I would love a bit of snow.

Welcome back to Smaller Homes. I love re-purposed and salvaged items--and I want to see pics, too. ;)

I got some pictures this weekend. Awful that I'm still living in a room with no drywall, but the space is warm and usable. Drywall this spring for sure.

Here's the south wall. The picture is a beautiful gauze scarf I found at a old stuff shop, wrapped over a frame and batting. I'll start weaving billowy huck lace curtains for the windows as soon as a loom is empty in a couple weeks.

And the bed in the corner. With cat Zachary and dog Benson.

The closet wall. The right half will be laundry/broom closet, the left clothing. These will get woven panels too, about 5 panels on an Ikea by-pass slide mount. I have to finish the coverlet I'm weaving for the bed first

One of the plans for the bedroom is to wall paper the ceiling. I found a cool modern paper of oversized apple blossoms.

Pretty neat, but too stark and modern for me. I hunted and tested and found some markers that draw like water color wash and held up to pasting a sample on a scrap of wall board. Now I have some 150 square feet to color.

I started working on this mumble mumble ago. I did not realize I was anticipating the whole adult coloring movement. That gives incentive to get back to it.

and the carport medical cabinet storage.

You are industrious! My late MIL had a loom, and enjoyed weaving, but I was never able to get interested.

However, I loooove the medical cabinets. Those would be great inside for a kitchen or craft room.

I used to weave but sod my loom when we down sized from 1850 to 1200 SQFT. I was just doing too many crafts. Yours looks very much like the Leclerc I had. The top tray was missing on mine.

LOVE all you are doing. Your coloring is gorgeous. I have been toying with doing our bed at an angle and about to give up and we have a much larger bedroom space than you do. I have some bi-fold doors I wanted to put behind the head board and create a storage area or a nice dressing area. That is Moccasinlandings idea and I have doors and bed and can not figure it out. We have a full sized bed. Not sure if yours is full or twin.

I ADORE your cabinets. I also used to do cheese and butter from my cows milk. I never did try to make wine. Mine comes in a box. LOL I might have missed about the shelves for the top. There is a company called the Store Supply guy that sells tempered glass shelves very reasonable. Even shipping was reasonable. HA I bought some to break and use in my mosaics.

Will add one more thing We had a regular closet door and at the last house I removed it because it really was in the way constantly the way the room was laid out. One was also on our closet here and within a couple of weeks I had it gone and stored too. The clothes stay so much fresher in a closet if they can breath. I have curtains up now and I am always changing things and change them often too. Your woven curtains will be great on the closets.
