Pear tree concerns

last modified: 10 years ago

I live in an area with serious fire blight issues. Despite much of what is said out there, very few pear varieties are not terminally susceptible to fire blight. One that I know of is Orient, which is mentioned in a few other posts on this forum. Orient is partially self-fertile, but will still benefit from a pollination partner whose blooming schedule coincides with that of Orient. All to say, I am looking for another truly fire blight resistant variety that is a good eater, and will serve as a good pollination partner for Orient. Ideas? Let me add, I am not dead set on Orient. It is not very sweet. If two other tastier varieties fit the bill then I am open to those as well. I live in central VA (zone 7a), so that is another consideration. Thanks
