What is the large block on the exterior? Is that cement or rock?

are you saying that the large panels are Hardi board, not stone or cement?

amazing, it looks great!! We are building a contemporary house and can not decide on exterior finishes. What is the back side of this house wrapped in?

I am not sure what you mean by "back side". There is a new house that is connected to an old cottage that was on the lot. The old cottage is just standard v-groove wood siding. You see the old cottage in the picture that has the pool in the foreground. We painted the wood siding of the old cottage a dark charcoal to contrast with the Hardie panel. The new house is all clad in the Hardie panel with the exception of the tower feature. The tower feature is stained yellow Alaskan cedar milled to a v-groove profile.

cool! thank you. We were thinking of using Hardie board on the sides of the house that do not face the front. Do you think that would work with the Hardie Panels if we used the panels on the front of the house like you have done? Did you paint the Hardie Panels and do they come in various size panels? I thought Hardie board only came in 4"-6" w lengths like lumber. To clear up what I am saying, use Hardie boards in a painted color (like a lite gray) everywhere except the front where we would use the Hardie rectangular panels. Is that too much Hardie used?

The Hardie "panel" comes in 4'X8' sheets. The panels were cut in the field based on our design and coordinated with window sizes and other joint layout issues. The panels come primed and we painted once they were installed. Installing the Hardie panels is challenging and more expensive than just plain old Hardie siding. I am a staunch purist so using one material on the front but something else on the sides is not something I would normally advocate. It would depend on the form of the house and what you can see from where and if there is a logical place to change the material.

I understand a staunch purist! Thank you so much for replying to my questions. So, would you suggest using the Hardie Panels all around the house? I appreciate your comments. So very nice of you to respond. One side of the house will really never be seen because it is a wooded lot and one side is at the very back end of the house, and could be a logical place to change the material. Happy Holidays. I may send you a layout of the house for you to see what you think. Looks very much like the house you designed.

Yes, the layout and form of the house are important to decide on material choices. Budget always becomes an issue and you have to make smart decisions holistically to get the best result.
