Make space look bigger

I'm going for a modern look in my living room. I'm having a hard time with making a decision on rather I should purchase a section or love seat and sofa? What do you guys/gals think? Your feedback is appreciated!

You could paint the room white, add large mirrors and a large white rug.

Think about the function first. How much seating do you need and how comfortable do you want to be. I find loveseats are not very comfortable for laying down or even sitting(unless you want to get intimate). Sectionals are very comfortable usually. Sofa and 2 chairs is a more formal and airy look but is pointless if no one likes to use the chairs.

Or keep your blue walls and add white furniture and a large rug like this one:

Is tv viewing the main activity here?

Sometimes the best position for the sofa away from the walls toward the middle of the room. Look for small settees, love seats and chairs that can work for your space.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm moving the TV above the fireplace.I was unsure about purchasing furniture color that's to light. I need the space to be functional for everyday use and kid friendly lol I would like to fit a recliner In the room design as well.

If I remove the window treatment will it look to bare?

Try it and see how it feels. Bare to one person is light and open to another.

I agree with pcmom, open the space up by adding light. Remove the sheers and go with lighter and less bulky furniture. It looks like a great space with lots of potential! Have fun with the process :)

Window treatments should be hung OUTSIDE of the windows, to make the windows feel larger, that way you don't block any light, but you still have the options for closing them if you need privacy.

Go for tone on tone or solid fabrics and rugs.

A sofa and chairs that are up on legs (not skirted), will look less "dense" than a sectional.

Check out designer Houzz sites, we often feature before and after rooms which can help you get ideas.

    Hope this helps?

Here is furniture arrangement for you, did not have exact dimensions, if you want to send I can adjust, but estimated.

Float sofa and add recliner and chair. Move TV to wall, do not hang over FP.

click to enlarge. Any questions post. If you want to modernize the room, get sofa and chair with legs will make the room look more open.

Get a longer TV console for the wall. It should be 25% longer than size of TV, but if you want to extend it on entire wall, then you can add accessories to ends.

Susan's arrangement is much better than having the TV over the fireplace. It's not comfortable to look up to watch TV for any length of time. Also bad for the neck. And the closer you're sitting closer to the TV, the worse it is.

Susan I love the floor plan and I'm using it!!!!! Thanks to y'all!!!!!!!

Be sure to post when you get your new "stuff". Glad to help. Merry Christmas. And be sure to check furniture measurements to make sure it all fits. :>)

If you like to lie on the sofa and watch TV, choose one with lower arms so it's comfortable for that. (We're sofa-nappers and our designer warned us about getting too high arms!) You could also get 2 recliners instead of a recliner and a regular chair, depending on how you like to use the room.

I'm glad to hear you're using Susan's furniture arrangement. It will make a huge difference in the space.

If you want a more modern look, though, get seating with legs, not stubby chunky legs, but long and lean ones.

West Elm makes a modern recliner that's neither clunky nor cheap looking, and it's affordable.

Nice, but the one I posted is $180 from overstock.com. rated 4 1/2 stars out of 5. 175 reviews. Light gray.

I'd also have to replace the green curtains, add a rug, and replace all vases with sticks or anything stick-like with art.

Unfortunately, that recliner looks like $180 chair, IMO.

If one goal is making the room look larger, and you really want drapes, then hang them so the edge barely covers up any of the windows.

A large round mirror over the fireplace would also help with that (even though I love that art).

    I don't see a $700 difference.

I agree with pcmom about the curtains, also keep them the same color as the walls and it will make the room feel larger.

I would add some recessed lighting as well - you need more light in the room than your current ceiling fan offers.
