Seems like with a whitewash finish table, white walls, and grey curtains, the room will look kind of blah. Although that might just be my take.

I also would keep the current table and chairs as is and add a rug. Then I'd look at painting the area below the chair rail a color that is complementary to a color in the rug. If you are keeping the room color in the grey family, a soft grey would work. And I like Auntjen's choice of a lamp style with the black shade. The one you have now is pretty but too heavy looking IMO.

Everything in the room is overly dramatic big. There isn't any variety in size, even the table center is big and dramatic. I feel sorry for the poor picture on the wall - it is completely ineffectual in that room.

To be dramatic something doesn't have to be big in size - it can be big in attitude. I would get smaller lamps to bring some variety of scale into the room but you could go slightly wider in base along with the black shade.

With the silver drapes being quite a center piece I don't thing I would add another metallic piece as you already have the chandelier as well.

I can't picture a white wash table with that buffet. Maybe I need a visual, but I think it would look like two very different styles. I like what you have in there now, large scale and all. I think the room can handle the scale and I think smaller pieces would look lost or dinky. I'd add a rug and you could change the chair fabric out.

Will the mirror just stay leaning against the wall? If so, I think the lamp is too large. From a distance I like the color of the lamp base with the chandelier. Does it actually look metallic up close? It looks like gold colored glass to me. I think it works fine even with the silver curtains. I do like the lamp Jen posted.

I didn't mean to sound so negative, it was just my minor .02. The room is gorgeous and your things are so pretty too, all of it. You can't hardly go wrong with that beautiful room. Hope you'll have fun tweaking it!

1. Must see whitewash table before giving opinion. It might work but i suspect the existing chairs would have to be replaced as well.

2. As is, too many wood tones and too much unrelieved wood surface. You definitely need a rug in this particular dining room.

3. IMO the walls need a color.

4. The lamp is awkward. Wrong shape and size and placement, it looks as is it is about to topple over.

5. Dining room curtains in cool linen color fight with existing palette of warm woods without any unifying colors or rugs or fabrics.i think you need to select a taupe / warm gray for the walls (if the curtains are indicative ofmyour color preferences) and a gray/ taupe and another color for your rug. Taupey gray and yellow or gold would work, as would a few blues including Tiffany blue (which might be a better color for your walls). Wait on chair upholstery until the other elements are fixed, unless you find a fabulous fabric and build the rest of the room around that.

The good news is that you are fortunate to have a house with fabulous architectural features!

I wouldn't white wash that table, it'spretty. The buffet is very dark, if you don't like the table with it, you could probably sell it easily on Craig's List. I think that a glass top table with some dark chairs to coordinate with the buffet would look really nice. Once you have that, start with a contemporary rug and pull from that. That lamp on the buffet is all wrong. I'm thinking something tall and shiney with patterned lampshades.

I just want to say your home is FABULOUS!!!

The mirror makes a bigger statement than the chandelier, so I'd take it out and try a painting since you only have solid colors and no pattern now. I think the hall table needs a simple mirror, so I'd try the black mirror there. That gold framed painting overpowers the hall table.

That painting might work over the sideboard. With the large squarish shape, your lamps might fill the empty space and balance it. I think a gold frame would be nice with the dining room sideboard, though my gut feeling is the ornate frame and dark, heavy subject matter are too much with the chairs and chandy.

good looking buffet! i would not want a whitewash table with the buffet. i would change the chairs- a patterned fabric would look great! i like your current chairs, but i think a different style would look better with your other things...

i would need to add color to the walls- either paint or wallpaper... if you prefer the white walls, i agree with those who said add a rug!

i think the lamp would look better if the mirror was hung, but i would prefer a bit smaller lamp for the buffet top

Thank you guys. I will agree, I do still need to add an area rug and yes the mirror will be hung. I like the table but will change the chairs to a fabric one.

Regarding the lamp, here are a few other options of lamps, which one do you prefer?

Of the three of them - the first one. The curved lines of the lamp help to soften the room and also ties into the curves of the chandelier and the curve of the buffet itself.

I remember your home from one or two years ago. You were posting about moulding for your living room, I believe.

Could you switch the mirror to the gold one in the hall? The reason I suggest this is because the buffet and black mirror make that area seem very dark and heavy. Then I think you could use the lamps with the light shades.

I like the lamps with the light shades, but I think patterned shades would add a little more interest to the buffet.

Of the three lamps I think the lines of #1 works best, but I would try the shades of #2 on them and see what you think. Also agree that mirror seems too heavy. And no on the white-washed table, it would be the odd duck out relating to nothing else in the room.
