I'd have a piece of stone or solid surface cut for the top......the ENTIRE top, and forget the doo dads, and the map......and maybe paint it black depending top. Or....sell and start over, if you want an airier , lighter look.

I think the furniture that is put in the room is what will make it or break it! If you have outdated furniture than it will look outdated.

I love my Bob Timberlake square coffee table. I've had it for at least 20 years. I would leave the glass on this beauty.

I think it's great! My sister-in-law just bought one and it was very good and very expensive. Do not do anything to it! She put her champion ribbons for her dogs agility events. If you don't have any medals to show, do you have ancestors that have something unique? What about an historic map of where you reside, or the closest city. That would be a real conversation starter. Don't replace the glass. Don't substitute stone or wood. It's a classic display case. The glass doesn't make it out of date. Perhaps it's the long lip on the sides. It's unusual shape. Are they drawers workable or just decorative? You might consider substituting new drawer knobs...maybe something
Speak in a brushed metal finish. If the drawers are operative, that is great space. I know 2 very successful lawyers who collect civil war maps. They have that chest. Or you could wait for a child to win gold as an Olympian. Otherwise sell it on Craig's List. Don't second guess yourself. You can't believe you got a great deal at a yard sale!
