The Move

Ken and the others you gave me great advice on the move. I had a 26 ft uhaul loaded with just my favorite conifers.Over 200 planted only lost five.I have been waiting to post until I have the perfect pictures and decided that would take another year or two.My house warming gift was from Conifer Kingdom.A horned elephant. He will be the centerpiece of this courtyard. In the back planted cypress and hopefully in a few years will have a complete hedge when they grow together.

    Are you near Silverton, Ore.?

    Looks good.

When did you move the plants?

    How far?

    Any advice from your experience?

Oh, my, that looks like a lot of work! They look settled in well. How long have they been replanted?

Ken I can't find the old post and I haven't been on this forum since I moved in April. When I logged on it changed my name.My original garden web name was cococo.I moved in April and it proceeded to rain here in Tn. once a week like a blessing from above. It was totally the wrong time to move in the Southeast.Thankfully the weather was amazing. I will send more pics when I get it mulched and weeded properly.Mike your gardens are amazing and this move made things backwards.I had to get the plants in the ground before I did the hardscape. I need to add rocks and may be calling on your design expertise in the future for that if you don't mind. Ken I used your technique with the large beds and will hit the outer layers of grass with roundup like you rec in another post. NHbabs they have now been in the ground six months so I believe after this winter they will be good to go. In addition I planted a Sequoia grove and they are thriving so far.I planted bald cypress in an area that holds water and 150 native maples.I look at the pics on this forum in sheer amazement because I have been so busy that the gardens are not perfect and refined as I so often see here. I have certainly benifited from the advice and thank you very much. Can I move a golden hemlock and a jap maple now? Some of the stuff in haste was placed in poor positions.

I tried to change my user name back to the old one but it kept saying already taken.Yes because it was mine. I got close though.

tsugajunkie Gold Drift thrived with the rain. I moved an hour east and the soil is actually black, not red clay and rock. They are all thankful.Mike, as far as advice on moving plants. I am so exhausted my advice is don't ever move. Also I have seen pics of your yard and would never offer you advice. My dream would have you come to my yard and give advice.

I asked for your experience in moving your garden in the hope that someone here on the Forum might be moving theirs. I think 'don't move' is real good advice!

I'm always moving plants because I didn't get it right the first time. It's always rewarding to fine tune things a bit rather than not do it and then having it bother you for years......until you have to cut it down. Been there more times than I'd like to count.

The work in moving plants to a better location doesn't bother me. I just figure that's the cost of doing it better than the first time. I call those practice holes.

Practice ditches are a whole 'nother thing!

I asked those questions because I didn't recognize your new name. I know the old one well. :-)

You've been doing a lot of work!

    Thank you,

    Mike

What I did find out is that conifers are very forgiving. From this experience I have learned to not be afraid to move them. They were in a uhaul for two days. Then they were in a dark storage building for weeks.

on my glacial sand... the second year i was here.. i planted 40 6 to 8 foot.. bare root oaks ...

it rained.. every 4th day .. keeping the sand moist ... but with the full drainage ... eventually.. i got them all mulched ....

at the time i did not have to spigots system all over the 500 foot square yard ... and dragging 750 feet of hose would have never worked ...

the rain.. was a gift from God ... as was yours ...
