Amy, if you are feeling exposed you can put up temporary window shades. That will give you more time to be sure with your choice.

Well if you are spending a significant amount on drapes I would go for a solid conservative color that won't date. I recently bought some and it cost me about $700 to have drapes for one window so I think I will be dead before new curtains go in this room. I went for a taupe color as I had white walls, so there is some contrast but I can still have other colors in the room.

I think pattern on such a large surface as curtains will make a room look quite busy, especially if it is on the small side. I would suggest to go with a curtain in a simple color, perhaps with a trim in a different color.

Thanks everyone - glad I asked! My couch and armchair are tan. We are going to paint the walls a light grey with white trim so I'm thinking white curtains would look nice. The room is basically a construction zone right now so I don't have any great pics. But again, I do appreciate the advice!

Something like this would be nice. It has the gray, tan and white and is a muted pattern that would look nice.
