First; is rug centered in the room?...looks like it is stopping short to the right of the fireplace and can the sofa go on the stair wall?

Yes...the rug is definitely not centered. We can take care of that. We are not sure where to put the couch...we welcome ideas on how to place the furniture and what other pieces to add.

Try the sofa against the stair wall. Put front legs on rug. Under that great picture, add a fit to size console, staying with the grays and blacks.

Furniture dont have to be pushed against the wall.

1. Place sofa to face the fireplace. Gather all your pieces in the center to create a cozier look.

2.Add a pair of arm chairs . I like JudyG's suggestion as a pop of color!Add the armchairs adjacent to sofa's sides.

3. If theres room, An end table could work on both ends of sofa. Add table lamps.

4. If you have a space for a console table under the painting, add one. 12-15" deep will do. Here you can add decors, picture frames, etc.

I think a pop of red would look gorgeous...even if just a couple red pillows.

Even when you center the rug, it is too small. If you put couch on the long end of the rug it will be much better. Even then, the rug is too close in color to you couch. Its ok, but I think a bigger but with a little more interest would really help your space.

Could you move the sofa against the stair wall and take a picture? If it fits, you do a console, you may only need one chair under t v.

I am liking (of course, I put it together) the black, white, grays and bronze (lamp) for a scheme.

Rugknots, I don't think a bigger rug will fit...hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks as if the room stops at the right side of the fireplace, so a bigger rug would carry out into a hallway.

JudyG, you are right. I didn't notice that it would carry out into the hallway. Just try having the couch on the long side of the rug!

This rooms is adjacent to the kitchen...very open concept. Our family room is on the other side. If you look at the third picture you can see a the couches from the the family room back there...I am adding more pictures to give you a better idea.

The art is way too large for your room, much less for that wall where it is crowded between the windows. Have you tried it like a mural on the wall behind the dining table?

JudyG we moved the sofa against the stair wall. Here is a picture.

Roll up the rug and arrange the sofa floating away from the two windows. A sofa table will go behind it. Once you get the furniture (and art) arrangement worked out, you can use painter's tape to tape out the right sized rug. I like them to slip under the front 1/3 of the sofa and extend past the ends of it by a foot or more.

Like that...now imagine a console/lamps under painting.

I prefer the sofa under the art and the chairs in front of the staircase.

Wonderful space! Although I love color, and always gravitate to red, I think this room just needs texture and the same colors you already have. If you keep the couch on the stair wall, I think it needs to be pulled in more. But I think I prefer it the way you had it first. So cool!

Here is a design we did. Take note of the chairs.

Although your art piece is beautiful, it is too big for the space between the windows. You need something smaller there. Also, I think drapery panels would really warm up the room - and you definitely cannot add them with the current art piece. The sofa can stay where it is, but I recommend pulling it out a little from the wall. Also pull the rug out further and centre it in the room. You could place a console on the stair wall. Add two chairs directly across from the sofa. Add a small occasional table between them. Add end tables on either side of the sofa, with lamps. Add an upholstered bench on the rug parallel to the console table on the stair wall. A large square coffee table would work well also. Find an "inspiration" fabric (that works with your existing furniture and rug and wall colour) for one of your new upholstered pieces and work from there to choose your accent colours for pillows, accessories, window treatments and other fabrics.

The sofa is better in it's original location. I'd put 2 chairs across from the sofa. If needed, you can put a console on the stair wall.

Even though the artwork is too large for the space that it is in....I Love it....I would not change it - it adds drama.

I think the focal point fireplace, built-in cabinetry and niches are plenty of drama. I suspect the dining area needs its own bit of drama, which the art would provide.

Hmmmmm.......The artwork with the sofa beneath it was very striking.

I love the new couch and the chairs with it! I am wondering if you might reconsider BeverlyFLADeziner's design plan from 12/28/15, either with the sofa under the artwork and chairs side by side under the staircase OR with the sofa facing the TV/fireplace and the chairs side by side with a small, "straight" table for two tea glasses between them under the art piece. The way you have it arranged currently, it looks nice in the photos -- where the fireplace doesn't show. I understand you enjoy the symmetry of it, but it's sad to put a chair in front of your beautiful fireplace.

The chairs might look nice under the artwork, but my first thought is that the classic lines (beautiful!) and neutral color of the sofa both compliment the artwork more and distract less in order to allow the eye to be drawn to the beauty of the artpiece.

I'm confident, whatever you decide, you will make choices that enhance your living spaces. What a beautiful home you have! :)

I'm certainly not an expert, however I am a big lover of art & I do not think that art can ever be too large. The placement is a factor though & I did like it placed over your sofa as in the first photo. How about adding very long skinny drapery panels from above the upper windows down the the floor? I do think it can balance the large art better.
